From academic pressures, to moving to a new place alone, to trying to forge new friendships, university life can be tough. This is exactly why everyone needs to have a support system that they can rely on in times of need. Not only is taking care of our mental health important for our well-being, but it also helps us play better basketball! I believe I can contribute to this notion by nominating myself to be UCLWB's welfare officer.  Although I know I won't be able to empathise with everybody's worries, and not everyone will want to share their struggles with me, I am prepared and open to being a listening ear to whoever needs it. Furthermore, I will make sure that everyone is informed that a safe and judgement-free space will be created if they choose to come to me as their first point of contact, and that I can direct their concerns to the appropriate people if needed. As co-captain of my high school's basketball team, I have experience in managing disputes between teammates, giving academic advice to my juniors, and being an approachable and caring figure. Some ideas that I think could be implemented in collaboration with the social secretaries are an introduction to journaling session, wholesome tea and painting, and regular check-ins to see how everyone is doing throughout the year.

Lola Clarke

Hello!!

I am hoping you all know me but if I have failed as social sec and not said hi yet, I'm Lola, a NatSci student, and next year will be my 3rd year at UCLWB (grandma core!).

With 2 UCLWB years of horrendous Saturday 9ams, many airballs and even more boxing-outs (successful and un) under my belt, I know all too well the highs and lows, physical and mental, that come with sport, and I know they exist regardless of skill level. Being social sec this year, I have seen how important the wonderful community fostered at the club is, and getting to know everyone has made me passionate about all of your wellbeings, girlies.

I am committed to promoting the positive and welcoming environment in da clerb by being an active presence in the club and running more welfare events (like sessions on bball rules, nutrition etc - come to hustings to hear more!). I want to ensure that, no matter how experienced a player is, they know they can belong here at UCLWB. Relationships with women's sport can be so complex both at a personal and team level, and I know I can bring my experience as a player and a committee member to provide the best support possible to each of you <3

I will continue Jane Jane's excellent work, making sure that every one of you feel valued and supported both on and off court. Be it cheering (very loudly) from the sidelines, lending a shoulder to cry/sleep on, or argue with the ref for you, I want everyone to know that they can turn to me if and when they need to :)
