Candidates

Sarup Saroha

I am deeply committed to bringing SurgSoc even greater heights of excellence. My candidacy is underpinned by a multifaceted blend of academic prowess, practical experience, and a clear vision for the future of our society.

With a First Class Honours in the Surgical Sciences iBSc from research conducted at the Royal Free Hospital's T&O department, I forged strong connections among students, trainees and consultants nationally. Leveraging this network, I am dedicated to launching a T&O Mentorship Program to connect to practicing surgeons, fostering academic and professional growth within the field.

Having attended several scientific congresses, T&O journal clubs, and workshops, and being involved in organising the 2025 NW Thames Orthopaedic rotation training day at the Royal Free Hospital, I have gained insights into diverse aspects of the specialty. This experience equips me to enlighten our members on different facets of T&O.

As the Education Officer for the UCL T&O Society, I have orchestrated innovative tutorials, workshops, and guest presentations. Building on this foundation, I plan to introduce interactive T&O workshops within SurgSoc, offering members hands-on experience in essential procedures and concepts.

In summary, my connections in the field, practical experience, and forward-thinking vision positions me as a dedicated candidate for the role of T&O Chair. I am eager to enhance SurgSoc and inspire our members to pursue a career in the best surgical specialty!

Dhanyata Narendra

Hi everyone! We're thrilled to have the opportunity to foster inclusivity, promote diversity and ignite passion for T&O. In just our first two years in med school, we've taken the initiative to build a large network of contacts through several conferences and involvement in committees. We have experience running large-scale events - e.g. Student Lead for the ATOMIC programme (WP for FMS) and Head of Engagement/Recruitment for a London-wide charity auction. We are excited to introduce initiatives to:

  1. Promote inclusivity
    1. Informal hot chocolate session with female surgeons
    2. Larger panel covering other topics such as family, journey, etc
  2. Curate a database of T&O surgeons
    1. Link students to surgeons for mentorship, research/audit and shadowing opportunities, i.e. continue work from time as T&O Events Officer
  3. Maintain engagement
    1. Monthly journal club
    2. Networking socials e.g. student research showcase
  4. Collaborate with wider UCL societies
    1. Anatomy + radiology society (MMB tutorials + festive quizzes)
    2. MSK tutorials for clinical years led by surgeons
    3. Displaying diverse disciplines e.g. hand (PRAS), bone sarcoma (Oncology), innovations (MedTech)
  5. Host 1st independent conference!

Combining 2 brains, networks and long summers, we are committed and realistic about achieving our goals. From popping muscles to many fractures, we cover all aspects of T&O and promise to deliver as your next chairs!

Tayyibah Patel

Hey everyone, thank you for considering me as your next T&O chair! I’m really excited to fuel your interest in this specialty; I have plenty of ideas for how to augment our exposure to T&O at medical school, building on the hard work of my predecessors.

Key aims:

  1. Taking things up a ~vertebral~ notch by expanding our access to regional and national events. How? As a representative for the British Orthopaedic Medical Student Association, I can streamline our communication with the national committee. This can broaden our scope for regional collaborations and allow you to meet more like-minded individuals.
  2. Improve our exposure to the TRAUMA part of T&O. This specialty is more than just ‘bros and bones’, and trauma management shouldn’t be neglected. How? A student-friendly ATLS (advanced trauma life support) series for anyone who is interested in managing acute life-threatening trauma cases, in the UK or on the frontline.
  3. Encouraging academic discussions of where T&O is headed over the course of our careers, to tailor our learning and optimise our experiences for the future. How? Holding a journal club with opportunities for critical thinking, analysis, student-led presentations and valuable feedback from esteemed T&O surgeons.

As well as working hard to push for innovative ideas, I am passionate about hearing more from you! I aim to not only provide a female-friendly face in T&O, but also to ensure that everyone’s thoughts are heard regardless of background and experience.
