Snowsports Club: Freestyle Captain

Freestyle training this past year was defo one of the highlights of the week, every week. Having attended my fair share of trainings and comps I know I can continue to help the growing freestyle team go from strength to strength. The atmosphere at training this year has been super special, simultaneously supportive whilst pushing each other to achieve new goals. This is the atmosphere I would want to continue to maintain and encourage next year.

I've seen firsthand this year that anyone can do freestyle if they are willing to turn up and give some new things a shot. If I were to be elected first and foremost, I would aim to encourage more members of the club to try freestyle by running an additional taster session at the start of the second term as well as continuing the This Girl Can session annually. Similarly to the beginner dry slope sessions, I think it would also be beneficial to run a dedicated beginner freestyle session at least once in the year specifically for people who have never tried freestyle before and want to give it a go surrounded by others who are in the same boat. 

I would also focus more on capturing some of the fun stuff we get up to each week at training. I think this will not only entice existing members of the club to try freestyle but also to entice more students outside of the club to join UCL snowsports. I'm sure if more students saw how much fun we have at training, comps, and socials, membership would increase. Freestyle 4 life <3

Hey everyone :) For those who don’t know me, my name is Cosmo, and I am thrilled to be running for Freestyle Captain again this year!

The 2023/2024 season was a landmark year for our club's Freestyle division. We created an inclusive yet competitive environment, doubling our sign-ups to over 20 members for our weekly trainings. My leadership race goals were achieved: we built a diverse team with a nearly balanced gender ratio and increased international student participation by 60%, all while preserving the traditional Freestyle spirit. Our hard work led to success at BUCS and AJAM, reaching the finals in both Men’s and Women’s categories and showcasing impressive results from our newcomers. The future of UCL Freestyle shines bright, with more medals on the horizon!

However, the potential for growth and improvement within our club remains, making the journey ahead even more thrilling. I am currently working on a long-term partnership with Snozone to make Freestyle more accessible than ever before, meeting the exponential demand while ensuring financial viability. My goal is to establish Freestyle as a hallmark of UCL Snowsports through strategic brand partnerships, an expanding social media presence, and targeted advertising.

With my experience, skills, and unwavering passion for Freestyle skiing, I am confident in making this vision a reality. I am fully committed to the role and eager to drive our team towards the pinnacle of British University Freestyle skiing.
