Disha Maktedar

Hi! I’m Disha, a first year Mathematics student. I’ve really enjoyed being a member of the society this year, with attending salsa classes and socials being a highlight of my week every week. It would be an honour to be part of the committee and give back to this wonderful community, which is why I am running for the president position!

Having many leadership positions in the past has equipped me with valuable skills which I feel would be applicable to this role, such as strong communication, organisation, and collaborative skills. Some of my previous positions include House captain, school council member, and running a culture-based society in my previous school for 2 years. I am confident in my ability to take on any responsibilities associated with the role with a calm and collected approach.

I’m inspired by the incredible job the current committee have done, and if you trust me with the opportunity to represent Salsa society in the coming year, then I promise to fulfil this role with utmost sincerity and dedication! Thank you for your consideration!!

Martha Stasinaki

Hi everyone!

For those who I have not yet met, I'm Martha, a third year Natural Sciences student, and former Treasurer of UCL Salsa Society (2022/23).

This year, I am delighted to be in the position to nominate myself for Salsa Society President 2024/25! I have seen the society evolve and blossom to the wonderful salsa and bachata community we have today, and I would love to play an active role within it once again.

I have first-hand experience in planning and running classes, workshops and one-off events (such as the Boat Party and End-of-Term Ball), as well as representing the society in the Salsa Performance Team. Providing engaging, quality and fun dance / socialising activities - where everyone feels comfortable - is the number one priority. I look forward to organising society trips, socials, performances and more volunteering opportunities to spread the salsa and bachata love! 💃

It goes without saying that collaborations with other societies and universities have been extremely fun and eye-opening. I would certainly continue building connections and collaborating with student-led groups and other organisations (nationally and internationally).

None of this would be possible without the support of a team of lovely committee members. I'm excited for this opportunity to work together with them, to learn, and to lead the society to even greater heights.

My experience, ambition and dedication won't let you down! :)

Yordan Janssen

Hey everyone! I’m Yordan, and I’ve caught the salsa (and bachata and everything else) bug and can’t seem to be rid of it.

I attended my first taster session in 2021 and have been hooked ever since. While I felt stiff and every movement felt alien to me, I noticed that (almost) everyone around me also struggled. The society had created a judgement-free environment which encouraged learning. Even as I was attending beginner classes, I started looking forward to the start of the week because Monday was Bachata Monday, and Tuesday was Salsa Tuesday!

As a member of the society, I have watched it reemerge from a post-covid time to the incredibly dedicated and caring community it is now getting better every year. I figured it was my time to give back to the society that has given me so much.

I am throwing my proverbial hat in the ring for the position of president! I have been so inspired by the hard work done by Tian last year and Alexa this year and those shoes seem mighty big to fill. However, I believe that with a whole committee we can take up that mantel and make the next ucl salsa society year better than the last two (if that’s even possible).

I have been involved with organisational roles through volunteering at children’s summer camps and being involved with Cornell’s Salsa Society’s committee. I am very much a people person and love finding hands-on solutions to challenges. I am looking forward to getting the chance to represent all of you if given the chance to do so.

Defne Lal Kocer

I am standing for this role primarily due to my love for both salsa dancing and society itself. Imagining myself as the president of this community feels right, and I am sure that it will be a highly rewarding role. Furthermore, I envision performing this role as a privilege since it is not a role that can always be achieved throughout life before the stage of professional work. I think that managing a society in its entirety can give me an opportunity to bring some of my personality traits out, such as confidence, time management, and the ability to stay even-tempered in challenging conditions. Inholding these traits would highly enhance my career in the future and during my major (neuroscience). These skills are also required in most of the teamwork-requiring roles acquired in different organisations. Although I acknowledge that nominating myself as the president of society is scary for me at this point, and that I can imagine (or I can't :)) the difficulties I might face, I am excited and have faith for myself.

All the best,

Defne
