Candidates

Hana Shimizu-French

Hi everyone, my name is Hana and I’m running for Language Director.

I’ve really enjoyed the past two years as a member and teacher in Jsoc, and am always amazed by the enthusiasm of both students and teachers during lessons. I believe the quality and scale of the language lessons really sets Japan Society apart, and I’d love the opportunity to contribute to this initiative using my ideas and experience.

Strengths:

  • Spending 2 years as a teacher in Japan Society and speaking to a wide range of students and members, I have a thorough idea of the strengths and weaknesses in the lessons and language events.
  • As a subcommittee member, I helped run Nihongo Nights and many other cultural and social events. I have a solid understanding of how Japanese lessons are organised, meaning as Language Director I’d be able to keep these initiatives running smoothly.

Goals:

  • Work with the language officers to improve feedback for lessons and events
  • Facilitate teachers’ dinners and rewards - to show appreciation for volunteers
  • Continue with Nihongo Night
  • Create a Jsoc instagram highlight - so students can see what was covered each week and to give insight into what the lessons are like
  • Give more notice to teachers before free lessons and help with making slides

I hope to make language lessons even more enjoyable for both students and teachers next year.

Thank you for reading and please reach out to @hana_sf1905 on Instagram with any questions!

Kazuki Mitsuji

Hi! I’m Kazuki! (first-year, Education Studies) I'm from the best city in Japan, Okayama (arguably).

I am running for language director because I fell in love with our passionate students and teachers. Since I started English as a second language in middle school, I know how challenging but fun and rewarding it can be. Let's embark on a journey to make language learning experiences in Japan Society way more exciting!

3 pillars of my campaign

  • More interactive class

Improving lesson structure (ice breaker, group work)

  • More connections between teachers and students

Sports events (football, dodgeball tournament?)

  • More rewards for teachers

Loyalty card (more participation => more rewards)

Why me

  • Teaching experience

I taught level 4 this year so I can give pragmatic suggestions on how to modify the style of teaching and some of the content.

  • Passionate student studying education

I am in Education Studies Program and knowledgeable about learning theories that can be applied to our language lessons.

  • Internship in language teaching company

I have been working at an English education company for two years. I am acquainted with teaching strategy and material making.

  • Second language learning experience

I actually ‘studied’ English as a second language so I can understand the struggles and the needs of language learners.

Please VOTE for me to create a better place that can bridge Japanese learners, Japanese people and Japan

Kanon Hamanaka

Hello! I'm Kanon, a first-year studying biochemistry.

I am running for Language Director next year. I am eager to bring a fresh, vibrant perspective in order to create opportunities to introduce the captivating facets of the Japanese language!

Having gone to the a multitude of events and teaching Japanese lessons this past year, I have had the privilege of getting acquainted with a diverse range of individuals.  I am eager to contribute as a member of the new committee, working towards establishing a welcoming environment for both new and existing members. My genuine enjoyment of teaching Japanese, coupled with my accrued experience, I hope to bring forth innovative ideas and effectively implement them.

Goals:

- Make lessons more accessible and expand a variety of learning styles

  • Language games
  • Anime, songs, and Japanese comedies translation exercises
  • Use Kahoot! to quiz

- Plan more fun events that everyone with different levels of Japanese can join

  • Events to learn Japanese buzzwords
  • Events to convert your name into 漢字(kanji)

- Proactively collect feedback from both students and teachers

- Recruit more teachers by sharing photos/videos of the lessons on social media

I believe I would be the perfect candidate and will be beneficial for the society as I am organised, responsible, and a good team player.

Please VOTE for me to take this amazing Japanese learning environment to the next level!!!!

Thank you for your consideration!
