Being in the golf society this year I have been struck with how welcoming everybody has been. I think it is very important for societies to not only focus on playing the sport that we all love but also to build friendships through social events.

I have been playing golf since I was 5, so it has been a massive part of my life! However, I realise how daunting golf can be to pick up at uni and through social events I believe we can build motivation and commitment.

As a member of the competitive team I think that I am well suited to the role to aim to bring the competitive and social members together. My favourite event this year was the scramble where I was able to share my passion for golf with less experienced players. I also really enjoyed the Christmas pot luck!

Alongside golf I am a member of the women's football team and have a friend who is the 'potential' social secretary of the women's basketball team. I think that it is important to have joint socials with other sports teams because we are a relatively small society, this would allow us to recruit more members and promote our society. It would be amazing to get more girls playing as well!

I was especially impressed by how well run the social media was this year and how clear the events were. This is very important at the start of the year when freshers have a lot going on!

As we are such a young society, I would be so happy to be social secretary in the aim of shaping what our society may become in the future.

Kanon Hamanaka

Hi! I'm Kanon, a first year studying biochemistry.

I'm running for social secretary because I enjoy being a member of the Golf Club and would love to have a great time at the events I will organise. I believe that my past experience as a secretary will allow me to create a fun and welcoming environment. I would love to maintain the fun events that the Golf Club already has while providing even more memorable experiences to members next year!

Some ideas are:

  • Joint uni socials
  • Fresher-friendly events as an icebreaker
  • Themed nights (karaoke, game, etc)
  • Non-drinking socials such as picnics

I would be able to create opportunities for members to connect both within and outside of our weekly range sessions. Furthermore, I would want to collect feedback regularly on events and socials for improvement.

I'm looking forward to creating lots of fun events for the club! Thank you for your consideration!

I really enjoyed being a part of Golf Club this year, and wanted to give back to the wonderful community that is UCL Golf Club in the post of Social Sec.

I have been part of the social part of Golf Club this year, and I'm super grateful for the people I got to meet here.

I appreciate how UCL Golf Club brings a community of golf lovers together and provides a safe space to learn and practice our swings. I also love how active the Golf Club group chat is, and the exciting socials we had this year. As Social Sec of UCL Golf, I plan to keep this lively environment up and even hold more collab socials with other sports/ non-sports societies.

My credentials: Treasurer of UCL Cats Society, Academic Secretary of UCL Biology Society, and Events Officer of UCL Kickboxing Club, all in one year. UCL Cats Society doesn't exactly have a Social Sec at the moment, so I was in charge of organising and overseeing socials along with the president; as Academic Secretary and Events Officer in the other two societies, I have nearly  unquantifiable experience reaching out to external speakers and societies for collabs as well as, again, planning and overseeing social events.

Favourite kind of social to plan: Lunch socials, movie nights (could plan Golf Tournament screenings for Golf?👀) and. most importantly, pub socials and Sports Night Pres :)

If this sounds like a good idea, cast me a vote- and I'll make next year the most fun-packed, social year for Golf Club!
