Jiayu Zheng (Sally)

Hi! My name is Jiayu (Sally) Zheng, I am a year 2 Psychology with Education student currently. I think I can be qualified for this position for the following reasons:

1. My field of study (Psychology) fits well with this position, so I can realise my expertise when needed;

2. I am optimistic and cheerful (enfp), good at socialising and communicating with people but also a good listener. In the past year, I joined the UCL and Edinburgh University's Listening Line for Chinese students as a listener, which gave me a more concrete understanding of mental health related counselling. At the same time, I also learnt from the perspective of a listener what kind of emotional support we need as international students in the UK nowadays, and I have my own thoughts on how to improve the situation. In addition, I have participated in volunteer activities such as autism-related projects and primary school voluntary teaching which has improved my ability to interact with others. I understand that all kinds of people in society have different ways of interacting with each other, and I should get along with them in a way that they are comfortable with.

3. In the past year, I held the position of Vice Minister of the Mandarin Teaching Department. Through planning and organising activities, and assigning tasks to members, I have further developed my communication skills, problem-solving skills and leadership. I have a sense of responsibility, and I get along very well with the members, so I think I am mature in my ability to take on the position

Why am I running for the position of CSSA Welfare Officer?

Being away from home can be difficult (especially in the Uk). In my early university days, I faced severe depression. Seeking help through UCL led me to realize the support at UCL was insufficient, especially for Chinese students who. This experience highlighted the need for a more empathetic and accessible mental health support system.

To address this, I'm developing a website and mini-program that connects us Chinese students with professional mandarin-speaking psychotherapists and counsellors. This initiative stems from a survey I conducted, which confirmed the widespread demand for such support among students. My aim is to foster a supportive and secure community that is free of stigma, encourages seeking help and warmly supported by not only a team of psychotherapists but also community members.

We all go through tough times in our life and I know from my personal experience how hard that can be. I genuine want to help more students who went through or are going through the tough phase, help me win this election and spread care and support for Chinese fellows in the UK!
