Conway Bettis

Having been a coxswain for seven years, I hope to further my understanding and appreciation of the sport by intentionally coaching coxswains. Despite my experience, beginning to cox on the Thames was incredibly nerve wracking and as Cox captain I hope to facilitate a group of confident coxswains who deeply understand the basics of coxing and the tide way. I intend on developing the skills of the coxswains through specific coaching rather than trusting them to figure it out alone. The coaching of coxswains is an incredibly over looked part of rowing unless attending special camps and my hope is to help coxswains learn the basics and then develop their own sense of style and boat feel. In doing so, I feel I can create a stable group of coxswains that feel more excited than nervous to be on the water and thus grow the coxswain population at UCLBC.  In addition, I intend to make sure coxswains are confident every time they get into a boat, prioritizing the safety of all members of the club. I feel that as Cox Captain I can create an organized and efficient system of getting coxswains into boats confidently and safely.
