Divy Joshi

Hi guys, I’m Divy, a first-year Anthropology student.

As a person who had to manage mental health struggles, I understand the importance of caring for your mind & body & I know what it’s like to need help, so I want to help you with any issues. Members must feel they have a support system & nothing is too big or small to be raised. That is why I’m running for welfare officer.

The university has welfare services I’m already familiar with, including free therapy & assessments, so once elected, I’d signpost these, but also do something more personal. Being similar in age to you, I hope you feel comfortable talking to me & I am quite open! However, practical help is something I’ll deliver too. This includes an anonymous reporting form, collaborating with Yoga & Meditation society, sending emails with podcast/video suggestions & more. Finally, for performers it’s crucial to remember caring for your body and mind equally, so I’d send a guide on keeping healthy, including: reminders to drink water, have down-time & more. Also, often you can rehearse yet feel unprepared & unconfident, so I’d help build mental confidence & at Bhangra Soc sessions, I’d speak to members, building trust in you.

Although this may sound cringey, I’m on a journey to find my own happiness, so if I help even one person on their journey or have a better university experience, mission accomplished!

I hope you vote me to be your welfare officer & look forward to spreading love & happiness!

Thank you, Divy

Suraj Singh Cheema

Hello Bhangra society members!

My name is Suraj and I’m applying to be your welfare officer. My aim is to strengthen our team’s cohesion through addressing anyone’s concerns and to be a friendly and approachable teammate.

Ever since the start of classes this year, I have loved building connections with my team members through encouragement in practice, socials outside, and general conversation about how everyone is finding things. I am fortunate to be a first year representative of 3 societies - this has allowed me to get to know many people and become someone to talk to about any issues.

The main way I would like to act as welfare officer is through allocating time in our classes for the team to come forward with any concerns or issues. We would engage in open discussion if possible; however, should individual discussion be necessary, I am confident I would have the ability to do so. Having participated in Rangeela, I have danced with a team already and can appreciate what is important to a society’s members. I have had a complete Bhangra experience that gives me confidence to work in welfare.

In the future I hope that we become even more open in communication so that our team can grow closer and therefore dance better together. I look forward to what is to come from Bhangra Society!

Govinder Singh Toor

Hi everyone, I’m Govinder, a 3rd-year medical student, running for welfare officer. Inspired after watching my friend perform at Rangeela last year, I decided to join the Bhangra society. After having a really good time training for and performing at Rangeela myself, I want to join Bhangra society committee to be more involved. As welfare officer, I will make sure the morale within the society remains high, as even though rehearsals are really fun, it can also be a stressful period. I will aim to organise welfare socials and meals to ensure this. Thank you 🙏🏽
