One of the reasons that we succeeded in being a society this year was hugely due to the events that were organised this year and I really think that we managed to hold a balanced number of events that were catered to drinkers and non-drinkers.

However, I do think we are extremely privileged to have a platform where we can raise awareness as to what's going on in Sri Lanka, so I would like to hold a few more charity events in the next year. Furthermore, our Christmas event was a great success and I want to try and make that our trademark event and make it even bigger and better than this year.

Another thing that I would like to try and organise for UCL Sri Lankan Society 2023, is some kind of a getaway trip. Warwick this year was so enjoyable and it was good because we got to travel with everyone and I do think it allowed our society to bond more with each other. So it would be great, if we could organise a small trip away just for our society to really celebrate what a great society we are.

I think I would make a great candidate as I have previous experience in this role for a different society. I also think I have the leadership, teamwork and communication skills that would allow me to succeed in this role. I'm motivated and passionate to hold events and welcome all the Sri Lankans at UCL to our big family. And it is a goal of mine to try and get as many new freshers involved and to make them proud to be a Sri Lankan at UCL.

Geemini R Hewamana

As charity officer this year, I have enjoyed every aspect of my role. We began the year with a charity fair to raise money for Ocean Stars which supports community projects in Sri Lanka.

I have also been involved in the general organization of events such as brainstorming games for our meet n greet games night, running our freshers fair stall and joined the trip to Warwick Cricket and Sapphire.

I have decided to run for Events Officer to gain experience having a different role within the society and as I will enjoy bringing new event ideas to life.

If elected, I would encourage future events such as:

  • More intersociety events- sharing our culture through fun events similar to the ladies cultural night where we collaborated with the Afghan, Kurdish and Indian societies
  • Organising more catered events- listening to society feedback to have more events in line with member preferences
  • Bigger events- starting our own signature event that we can invite other universities to and planning more big society trips

I hope to use the experiences I have gained being on this year’s committee to be a valuable member of next years committee so we can keep celebrating what it means to be Sri Lankan!
