I started playing squash this September and fell in love with the sport. It's fun, friendly, and a lot of the time, exhausting! Playing squash has given me the opportunity to keep fit and meet some wonderful people. The atmosphere at social squash is always fantastic and it has been a pleasure playing alongside my fellow squash fanatics.
It is for this reason that I would like to give back to the Squash Club by running for Social Squash Secretary.
I will attend every social squash session and I plan to host a round robin style tournament for the squash club members, to give every member the chance to compete with each other in a fun and competitive environment.
Being Social Squash Secretary would be an invaluable experience to showcase my ability of being in a position of responsibility, while further connecting me to the sport that I feel so passionate about.
I'm Leila, a first-year Geography student from Bath and since joining UCL, I have found the social squash sessions to be a comforting start to my Sunday mornings! I've loved being able to chat and listen to what everyone's been up to while occasionally knocking a ball around! I have played squash for over 10 years during which I have been part of my local county team, competed in multiple tournaments, and assisted in junior squash coaching. As a result, I feel confident in my knowledge of the sport and my ability to direct and organise our social squash sessions as well as suggest new activities.
Through this role, I hope to:
- improve social squash sessions by providing a more structured opportunity to play casual games during the sessions, on top of our usual three-quarters! I believe having the option for more competitive play could appeal to more of our players and also give beginners a friendly introduction to matches, encouraging everyone to take part in the Social Squash Cup
- continue to build on the buddy system and the Cup with feedback from everyone on how they'd like them to be organised or made more accessible.
