Why president?

I believe the president is both an external and internal-oriented role: to be the voice for members and bridge between members and the EXCO, but also to set the direction and steer the EXCO and society towards a collective vision. The desire to effect changes that will create a better UCLSS and passion to create a more inclusive community has led me to run.

Why me?

I am genuine and approachable, so you can come to me anytime if you have new ideas or suggestions for improvement! :) but also will implement ideas in an organised and realistic manner.

I promise to 1) Form stronger bonds within UCLSS through new initiatives; 2) Build wider connections beyond UCLSS; 3) Engage UCLSS members – reviewing and improving current UCLSS initiatives

Vision for UCLSS: An inclusive and extensive community of Singaporeans who have fun together

Vision for UCLSS EXCO: For every member to both feel valued and uniquely value-add their own ideas and colours to the planning of Singsoc events

How will I realise my vision for UCLSS?

  1. Leverage on shared interests – eg. regular Mahjong sessions, Creating sports interests groups (Tennis, Badminton, Volleyball) that allow for intra and inter-batch bonding
  2. Increase collaborations to widen our network – eg. socials with ASEAN societies (eg. Malaysian, Filipino, Thai), Sports Games between UCL ASEAN societies
  3. Create channels for members to contribute ideas and feedback – before the start of AY and from participants post-event
Edmund Ngan

Before coming to London, I was very worried about whether I would fit in as I didn't know many people coming to study in UCL. However, through the many initiatives of UCL Singsoc such as Orientation, Christmas Dinner and CNY Dinner, I was able to find a close knit community away from home that would give me many fond memories of my time here in London.

After benefiting from the hard work put in by the previous committee to organize all these activities, I was inspired to run for this year's committee in order to pay it forward to my fellow Singaporeans. I feel that I am suitable for the job as my friendliness makes me easy to approach, allowing me to connect to other members in Singsoc and design activities that would better cater to their interests and needs. Being part of the junior committee, I was able to assist in the planning and execution of events within Singsoc this year and I believe the experience I have will enable me to give valuable inputs on future activities.

If I am elected, I will carry on the work done by the previous committee but I also hope to launch new initiatives based on feedback from members. I will provide more support to organizing sports activities in Singsoc by collaborating with other UCL societies (e.g. Msoc) as well as Singsocs from other London universities. I also want to organize more small scale activities (i.e. movie/picnics) on a regular basis to engage people throughout the year and build a sense of community amongst Singsoc members.

Yeo Shen Yong

Because I have two legs, I would like to stand up for Singapore.

This is home, truly, where I know I must be

This is my country, this is my flag, this is my future, this is my life, this is my family, these are my friends

When there are troubles to go through, I look around and start anew

And in the end, hand in hand, we will get there

Count on me Singapore, count on me, Singsoc

Jennifer H Tan

Hi! I’m Jen, a first-year Geography with Social Data Science student. Personally, I had a great experience with SingSoc this year, and hope to give back as your next President!

I’m passionate, steady and ambitious — all traits I think would make me a great President that strives to push SingSoc to new heights. Having previous experience leading in Student Council, House Directorate and an environmental movement, I believe that I have the practical leadership and organisational capabilities that pair with my energy and enthusiasm to get things done.

I’m also in this year's junior committee! As SingSoc’s First Year Representative, I helped plan events like Mahjong Night, Christmas Dinner and Spring Ball, working closely with the current EXCO to understand the inner workings of the society. Taking the lead on Spring Picnic and the After Action Reviews for each event this year, I have gained insights into the strengths and areas for improvement in the society, and am well-acquainted with the systems and processes involved. Therefore, I’m confident in leading the rest of the committee next year.

If I am given the privilege to serve as your SingSoc President, here are 3 things I will work towards:

  1. Continue the spirit of SingSoc through our key events and informal socials (e.g. sports friendlies)
  2. Work closely and decisively with my committee to ensure effective planning of events.
  3. Make a concerted effort to hear and act on feedback from beyond the core group of SingSoc-ers.
