The Salsa Society has become my second home at UCL - I would love to help uphold its warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Marianne Heleine

I joined salsa only 6 months ago but in a short time it has become such a big passion of mine. The dancing, music, people and culture of it all has been such an amazing experience. I’m very grateful to have had the opportunity to immerse myself within the society and I want to make sure that everyone can. I would love to be the classes coordinator and make sure classes continue as they are with our fantastic teachers too. I’ll make sure classes are well organised, accessible for all levels and try to find the best rooms for each class. I will also communicate with other Latin dance teachers in London and set up lots of fun workshops where new styles and skills can be learned. I will be proactive and regularly attend classes to make sure that everything runs smoothly. I really want salsa society to continue thriving and will do the utmost to make sure of it. Thank you for reading my manifesto and I would really appreciate your vote!

Alexa C Marroquin

Hi I’m Alexa!

I’m running for the classes and scheduling coordinator!

Like many of you, I started salsa this year and would’ve never thought that my life could so quickly turn into something straight out of high school musical (Salsa Edition?)...but here we are!

This love for salsa has been cultivated through many lates night classes and laughter in the Cristopher Ingold building.

These weekly classes form the core of our salsa society. They’re a welcome change of pace after a stressful day of lectures and a fantastic way for people to connect. Moreover, the sense of community forged in classes can be felt when practicing challenging new moves as well as on the dance floor.

From my position as UCL Salsa’s Social Secretary this year, I am familiar with event planning, coordinating workshops, negotiating discounts for our members, connecting with professionals in the latin dance community, and working with the Student Union. With these skills, I hope to facilitate in our classes being run in better rooms for our society's needs and deliver exciting new workshops by collaborating with societies in UCL as well as guest instructors, so our society members can gain additional exposure to styling, musicality, and other Latin dances.

I hope to support the UCL Salsa community by ensuring the smooth running of classes and workshops, whilst preserving a warm and welcoming environment so people have a safe space to explore their love for salsa, regardless of their level!

Michi Aneez

If you haven't seen me in the salsa classes themselves, you probably know me as the person at the door, registering you in for your booked classes! That's me, Michi, the classes coordinator this year and I'm running for this role again for the 2023/2024 academic year.

When I campaigned for this role back in November 2022, I said that I was dedicating more time to salsa than my final-year research project. Since my love for the dance and our wonderful community has only grown since then, that previous statement -still holds true to this day (just don't tell my supervisor!).

In the three months since I was elected, I've mastered the behind-the-scenes work that ensures classes and workshops run smoothly, forged strong working relationships with each of our instructors and learnt the inner workings of the room booking system - all of which will allow the future committee to continue providing quality classes, events and workshops for our growing community of 500+ members.

Being a member of the UCL Salsa Society and a part of the committee as the class coordinator (and unofficial competition photographer!) has been an incredibly rewarding experience and has completely changed my university life. So yet again, with your vote, I'd love to keep using all the knowledge I've gained to foster the legacy of UCL's Salsa Society and continue making it a safe space for anyone to explore their passion for salsa and bachata, no matter their level of experience!
