Mukaddes Sedef Kalkavan

I am standing as an Under City Lights editor because I am passionate about music journalism. I want to help make the articles the best version of themselves and make the website + article layouts most reader friendly. Additionally, I want to curate two magazine editions for next year, bringing together a variety of creative music articles.

Alexia Mihaila

My name is Alexia Mihaila, I am a fourth-year Arts & Sciences undergrad and I'm running as an UnCL editor!

Having been Head of Music for over two years and running two radio shows, Songwriters Station at Rare FM and Daily Intermission at WCBN FM in Michigan, I’ve developed a passion for radio which was already fueled by my love for music. In the past, I've also managed to secure interviews with slowthai, Ray Blk, Tom Odell's band members, and more.

My plan for next year is to:

* Make the website more professional and fun aesthetically

* Bring back the yearly print and online issue

* Seek and promote UCL artists through interviews and acoustic performances

* Organise bi-monthly meetings to discuss possible ideas for the magazine, as well as, check up constantly on members' progress of the monthly online articles

*  Expanding the Rare FM written and video interview catalogue with UnCL

* Collaborating with other music societies such as Live Music, EMS and more.

* Form and train the UnCL team by organising workshops with other societies and people in the industry

* Get UnCL press accreditation for national and international music festivals/conferences

 * Work closely with the Head of Music to secure gig passes and interviews for writers and photographers

Given my past experience as Editor-in-Chief of UCL Film Society's Journal, interviewing music artists for UnCL, and writing music reviews for WCBN FM, I'd love to work this year with UnCL as an editor!

Nadia Azizuddin

Hi, I’m Nadia :)

I’m a second year Ancient World BA student and I host School of Rock on Rare FM. Even though I’m a massive Red Hot Chili Peppers fan, I will limit content about them to 60% of our output. Minimum.

I’m probably joking.

As the editor for UnCL I plan to;

  • Leverage social media to increase the reach of our magazine and its writers, and to create a more transparent pathway to authorship.
  • Increase the frequency of publication by adding a digital catalogue using the website to publish regular, year round submissions as they’re written.
  • Begin public archival of Rare FM shows to enable on demand playback of episodes and help the growth of our shows.
  • Foster a sense of community and collaboration through monthly workshops that allow members to discuss ideas and inspire each other.
  • Embrace home grown talent by positioning UCL artists and bands front and centre in our publication.

I believe in making UnCL accessible for everyone, all backgrounds and tastes and interests. My primary aim for the magazine is for it to be the platform for people who are passionate about music and enjoy discussing all aspects of it.

I already treat music like it’s my job and I already don’t get paid for it so I would love to use this role to make UnCL everything it deserves to be.

P.S. I play the bass, in case you didn’t think I was cool enough. Please vote for me.

Shivam Pathak

Hi Rare members,

I'm Shivam and I'm standing to one of your Under City Lights editors for 2023/24. This is a position that I feel suits me very well due to my experience in journalism, as well as my desire to make writing an open, inclusive space for everyone.

Last year I was Culture Editor of the UCL online newspaper Pi Media, so I'm very familiar with music and arts journalism, as well as the editing process and how to write effective and engaging pieces. I love receiving suggestions and helping to mould them into exciting news angles, as well as helping to reach out to those who would like to contribute, but are not sure where to start.

I believe that music is a universal language that has the power to connect people from all walks of life, and I am excited to help share this message through Under City Lights. I have extensive experience writing and editing articles, conducting interviews, and developing content strategies, and I am confident that these skills will translate well to the role of co-editor.

RareFM already boasts a strong network of contacts of musicians, and I would as co-editor ensure that everyone has the opportunity to conduct interviews, profiles and reviews, so that we can truly produce a portfolio of work that is impressive both in print and online, but more importantly ensuring that everyone can has the opportunity to have a go at music journalism and have fun doing it!

Thank you for your consideration.
