Candidates

Aakanksha Som

My name is Aakanksha and I believe that I would be a suitable candidate for this role. Having worked as both a data analyst (1 year) and a social media coordinator (3+ years), I strongly believe that I have the right experience to thrive in this position. These roles refined my analytical and leadership skills which will aid me as treasurer. My vision for the 93% Club is as follows:

1) Long-Term plan: I will develop a long-term financial plan for the society, outlining our goals and objectives for the next few years. This plan would help us allocate our resources effectively and ensure that we are able to meet our financial commitments. Additionally, it would also allow us to make strategic decisions about how we want to grow as a society.

2) Fiscal Responsibility: As treasurer, I will ensure that the society's funds are managed responsibly. I will develop a budget that is realistic and sustainable, and I will work to make sure that the society does not overspend. This will entail negotiating with sponsors to get the best prices and making sure that all expenses are justified, which I have done previously, as mentioned below.

3) Fundraising: Seeking out fundraising opportunities for the society. This will include new sponsors, events, and encouraging members to contribute financially. The more money raised, the more we can do as a society for our members.

As the treasurer, I will commit to delivering a financially stable, sustainable and successful budget.

Kate Goodall

I am standing as Treasurer as I would love to be part of a society that is essential at a university like UCL. After growing up in Northern state schools being taught by supply teachers in classrooms covered in black mould, moving to an ‘elite’ university on an Access UCL offer can feel incredibly isolating.

I would love to be part of this committee as it’s been incredibly reassuring & refreshing to meet lovely people who want to make UCL a more viable option for students who didn't grow up with established networks & have been discouraged by friends, family, & even teachers from studying at UCL.

As Treasurer, I will keep the club's finances in line & solve any financial issues in the club. I hope my experience proves useful in this role, as I got an A* in A-Level Economics & have taken elective modules in Economics alongside my History degree.

Additionally, I hope we can tackle the effects of educational inequality & encourage more students to join the club through social events, social mobility workshops & forming connections with various career sectors.

After helping current students at my college who did not consider UCL due to their socioeconomic backgrounds, I hope to bring university-wide awareness to this issue that prevents many state schoolers from studying here.

I hope our efforts help to level the playing field & make us state schoolers feel more comfortable and confident during our time at UCL and in our futures!

Thank you so much for reading! <3

Chloe Elizabeth Cheung

As a recipient of a social mobility scholarship, I have benefitted from initiatives such as the 93% Club more times than I can ever count. I would love the opportunity to contribute where I can in order to help pay it forward to the next generation of upcoming state-educated students.

  • I have experience using accounting software such as Xero, and have worked part-time accounting the finances for small, local firms.
  • I have had work experience with financial institutions such as HSBC which has helped to build my knowledge of managing finances for organisations.
  • Having studied Finance at AS-Level, I have a basic foundation of how to manage the finances of 93% Club efficiently to ensure as many people benefit from this organisation as possible.
  • I have been a Zero Gravity Ambassador for the past 3 years, having benefited from this platform since I was in Year 12 and now returning to mentor students now that I am in university.
  • I have an extensive track record for volunteering and organisation. This includes serving as the President of my school’s Charities Committee where we raised £11,000 within five days. I am currently also an Executive Committee Member of Effective Altruism UCL.

Harry Thomas

As last years treasurer, I feel it is appropriate to nominate myself for this role next year. Prior to September 2022, the UCL 93% was not managed well. Josh, Annie, Chloe, and myself have managed to turn the club into a thriving and friendly environment, organising consistent socials, and developing ambitious plans for the club's future. As treasurer, I feel I have contributed significantly to this revitalisation of the club, and I have really enjoyed the process.

I am extremely familiar with all of its requirements, most specifically working alongside SU, abiding by its detailed training. I can therefore use my years worth of knowledge to keep the club's finances in order, and ensure the club is working to its best ability in this regard. Voting for me as treasurer will save time with training, and getting to grips with the workings of the club. I am familiar with all of its requirements, and I have a proven track record of doing a successful job at this role.

However, the reason for my nomination this year is not solely down my experience in this role. I also have a genuine passion for this club, and since joining I have fully understood the importance of having a state-school representative for UCL. we manage to provide an environment for students who wish to connect with others from similar backgrounds, and this club has helped me significantly. I therefore feel strongly about the club, and I want to continue my relationship and make a difference on the committee.
