Candidates

Ziyad Chaudhary
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

I’m Ziyad, a second year History, Politics and Economics student and I’m running to become the next Union Affairs Officer. If elected, I hope to:

  • Push for tuition fee compensation due to disruptions to student learning from the pandemic.
  • Negotiate with the relevant stakeholders to reduce accommodation costs for all students.
  • Ensure our campus remains a safe space for all students.
  • Combat feelings of isolation through the effective use of union spaces to build a strong student community.
  • Push to make all UCL facilities as sustainable as possible.
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I have wide ranging experiences which include working for the Office for National Statistics to leading an anti-knife crime organisation. I am a national debating champion, winning the Rotary Speaks competition at the district and regional levels. I am heavily involved in both cultural and faith societies at UCL and I will extensively lobby and meet student desires if elected for the Union. I was Head of House at my sixth form and successfully increased funding for the house and I wish to carry on this momentum with the SU.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

My experiences and attributes demonstrate how ACTIVE I am and in this current climate, student voices need to be heard; this requires a big personality. Someone with enthusiasm, determination and gumption. If you actually want someone who's prepared to actively fight for what you want – then vote for in my favour.

Deniz Akinci
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

Hi everyone! I’m Deniz, a 3rd year law student, and I plan to work on the following as your Union Affairs Officer:

  • Set up a bursary to support students in need of financial aid
  • Improve democracy and transparency by livestreaming and recording all policy debates; raise awareness about the Union’s agenda
  • Contribute to student development by creating internship opportunities within the Union
  • Fight for sustainability, and increase the number of water fountains across the campus
  • Strive for more inclusion; expand the selection of halal, kosher, and vegan food in all cafeterias
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

During my time here, I worked actively with the Union and UCL to improve the student experience as the President of Turkish and Legal Tech Societies, and as the Speaker Secretary of the Law Society. I’m committed to helping others and have worked hundreds of hours on various non-profit projects, from volunteer teaching to fundraising for Lawyers Without Borders at UCL. Over the years, I’ve seen how much each of us can contribute to the life at UCL, and to each other. We only need our voices to be heard, and the opportunity to make a change.

Give me your vote and lend me your voice!

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

In my first year at UCL, I observed a Students' Union referendum on a major issue go completely unnoticed and fail to reach a quorum. Afterwards, UCL went ahead with the decision, essentially with no input whatsoever from the student body.

As your representative, I will make sure that this will never happen again. Whoever you are, your voice will always be heard by the student body, the Union and UCL. To learn more about how I will make that happen, or to voice any of your demands from your Union, feel free to reach out to me!

Emma Cryer
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?
  • Improve communication processes between students and the SU for faster action in responses to issues important to us and better synchrony in our priorities.
  • Continuously work towards safer SU spaces for women & marginalised groups. The wait time between our requirements and their implementation should be weeks at most, not months.
  • Expand the nights we host at our bars to more performance societies.
  • Improve the clarity of student support offered by the SU.
  • Regular check-ins with representatives from a diverse range of students to stay informed about what matters to you.
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

Between my 3 years of experience at UCL bars and current role as a society president, I know the primary parts of the SU better than anyone. By being extremely active in Girls Night In and organising women’s safety training for clubs- I have worked to create an outline for safer Union spaces. Being able to see how this is implemented, I know we need to work faster and communicate more effectively that students’ concerns are being heard. Also working to promote better student wellbeing; it is important to me that everyone has access to the individual support they need.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

I’ve made an effort to integrate myself into many parts of UCL student life, and I hope that makes me someone you feel comfortable approaching with your ideas for a better SU! I never hold back from immediately taking action through my club whenever I see an injustice at UCL that needs to be addressed and will continue my current campaigns for the things that matter to me, as well as representing yours if elected as your Union Affairs Officer next year! 1 million bonus points in the Phineas quiz if you vote for me :)

Anoushka Beattie
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

I aim to foster a constructive relationship with academic and support staff and their unions, working alongside them to support their industrial action and related campaigns. This involves urging senior management to engage in negotiations with staff unions to meet their demands, preventing the recurrence of strike action. Another priority is ensuring UCL takes an unapologetically pro-Palestine stance and opposes Israeli apartheid. In part, this entails lobbying to end UCL’s financial relationship with arms companies. Working with other sabbs, I also aim to push UCL to rejoin Stonewall.

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I’m frank and easygoing, confident in myself and my aims and positive in my ability to act in an executive yet considerate manner. I’ve been active in building and coordinating student awareness and support for recent rounds of UCU strikes, liaising with staff and other students to organise support and protest action. I have a background in student organising and have worked with a number of NGOs and political organisations. Being the Head of Social Justice in a student council gave me a taste of what it’s like to represent student views while working against institutional forces.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

Let’s put the ‘union’ back in the ‘Student’s Union’! As students, we hold immense power, that we can, and will, harness for real, radical transformation of our university. I’m running as a part of a slate of student organisers who are seriously committed to working towards a demarketised vision of university that supports its students and workers. If you want to see UCL transformed, vote for me and my colleagues: Mary for Activities Officer, Mustafa for Equity Officer, Daria for Welfare Officer and Jenna for Education Officer.
