Allegra Wisking

As Ophthalmology chair, I wish to enable students, across all years, to gain an insight into this fascinating specialty. Sadly, at medical school, we get very little exposure to Ophthalmology so it is important that we provide useful events and resources so students can better understand a career in this field and expand their knowledge further.

This year I thoroughly enjoyed being a member of the Ophthalmology subcommittee. I was responsible for arranging two of the talks, and received positive feedback, proving my ability to organise successful events. Working alongside Yousif, the current chair, showed me the commitment, enthusiasm and drive required to effectively fulfil this role and I believe that I too will be able to demonstrate these qualities.

I would like to continue his efforts, facilitating some of the projects we’d begun planning, including:

  • Mentoring scheme: accessible to all years, utilising our affiliation with Moorfields to enable students to network with leading clinicians, and gain experience shadowing and collaborating on research projects.
  • Lecture series: recruiting doctors from various subspecialties and levels of experience to share their stories and knowledge.
  • Tutorials and e-learning resources/revision guides to supplement these.
  • Interactive workshops to provide a hands-on experience of the specialty.
  • Networking events.

I promise a fruitful year if I’m elected- thank you for your support!

Mominah Tauseef

I’m Mominah, currently in my 4th year & running for the Ophthalmology Chair.

Aims:

1 To continue the provision of the Duke-Elder course
2 To deliver insightful & interactive sessions with trainees
3 To provide links for students to networks of Consultants
4 To collaborate with Imperial for Microsurgery/Plastics Conference
5 To explore the delivery of microsurgical skills
6 To provide volunteer-led fun-days for schoolchildren

These aims will help fulfil my overall goal of exploring the field holistically & collaboratively, with equal access for whomsoever it may interest regardless of experience.

I feel well-placed for the role having picked up some management, interpersonal skills & educational experience owing to previous roles over past years. I have delivered PACS tutorials, mentored Anatomy & this year have organised a three-month long teaching scheme for first years with the Islamic Society. As President of the Medical Society, I reinforced its connections with the Medical School & oversaw the running of 50+ tutorials, 15 talks, 2 conferences & clinical skills sessions. I gained experience with extensive high-profile sponsorship for MedSoc which I hope to bring to the role.

Being elected would allow me to use my position to benefit those interested in ophthalmology - through this, the medical student community on the whole in the short-term; beyond this, for current and future students, trainees + doctors.

Rahul Ramesh Rana

Hi, I’m Rahul, a fifth-year medical student and I’m running to be your Ophthalmology Chair! I am applying for this position because I want to provide students who are interested with greater insight/further exposure to the speciality as well as strong academic support.

In my role as chair, I intend to:

  • Host educational events featuring clinicians presenting information on ways to develop a successful ophthalmology portfolio
  • Duke-Elder revision series with UCL medical students who have sat the exam and Ophthalmology trainees closer to the 2023 examination
  • Considering the relaxation of COVID restrictions, I would like to increase student exposure to the field of Ophthalmology by setting up a mentoring program where interested students can shadow doctors in surgeries and improve their understanding of the speciality
  • Microsurgical workshops

As Vice President of the UCL Punjabi Society, I have developed leadership and management skills. I have further honed my event planning and collaboration skills in my previous role as the treasurer. I believe that I could put these skills to good use as part of the committee to maintain the standard of this society. Having joined UCL surgical society recently, I was highly impressed by the tremendous amount of support this society provides students with its array of online workshops and webinars. I am highly keen on being a part of this society.

I hope I have your vote! Thank you.
