Surgical Society: Academic Surgery Chair

Hi guys! I’m Thiara and I am running to be your Academic Surgery Chair.

Subcommittee experience:

• Recruited speakers for VASC 2022 – E.g. North London lead for Academic Foundation programme + London lead for Robotic Surgery
• Organised seminars - How to Start with Research + Surgical Portfolio for Core Surgical Training
• Contributed to a research project on ‘How medical school impacts perceptions of surgery’, alongside Academic Chair

Plan for next year:

• Create Academic Surgery Research Collaborative
• Run workshops on coding, statistical skills + other essential research skills
• Run workshops to practise poster + abstract presentations
• Create Surgical Research presentation series with prestigious speakers
• Introduce seminar on MBPhD
• Host academic competition + essay prize within VASC

Research experience:

• Journal article: Targeting BRD9 in prostate cancer
• 2 Systematic reviews: Radiosensitisers in prostate cancer + Changing policy on intravenous iron for pre-op surgical patients
• 2 Service Validations: Urology MedTech device + ENT Coblation therapy
• International presentation on wearables at DELPHI MedTech conference 
• Surgical Sciences iBSc

Past committee experience:

• Medic+ Club Secretary 21-22 
• Medical Sciences Faculty Rep 20-21 – Created IMS Peer-to-Peer support service
• Anatomy and Art Exhibition publicity officer 20-21 – Reached over 200 attendees
