Hi! With us both having done the cardiovascular science iBSc, we would like to continue our journey in exploring and developing our cardiology-based knowledge. We would love to share our interest with others as part of the medical society. It is our belief that the skills we possess combined gives us a significant advantage. We have made links with individuals related to the cardiology field during our iBSc, and believe that we will utilise our connections to bring about new events, especially relating to the specialised field of paediatric cardiology, having formed connections with Great Ormond Street Hospital.

With our previous experience as part of the pre-clinical education subcommittee and our experience in other societies, we believe as part of the medical society we would be able to:

1.  Provide opportunities to network with consultants

2.  Lecture talks with current trainees in the cardiology field to find out how to build a portfolio related to the cardiology field

3.  Continue to work with the education team to deliver tutorials in relation to cardiology

4.  Provide opportunities to learn about current developments in the field

5.  Deliver courses with practical skills in cardiology

6. Create a new subcommittee to deliver our aims

Electing us will be of benefit to those with an interest in cardiology, allowing them to explore the field, gain practical experiences and advice, to convert this interest into a future career.

Rahul Chandrasekar

Hi there! - I'm Rahul and I'm in 4th year.

I have always loved cardiology and I'm highly enthusiastic to share my passion with you all! I intercalated in Cardiovascular Sciences last year and developed a deeper appreciation for the physiological/epidemiological aspects of this field. I took this knowledge into my clinical cardiology placement this year but realised that the beauty of this speciality is not well-promoted to students despite its reputation as a wide-ranging/prestigious speciality. I seek to change this.

Aims

  1. I have always believed that stimulating interest is the first step in building engagement, in turn leading to commitment. While cardiothoracic surgery is well-covered, students aren’t exposed to innovations in the medical aspect of cardiology as much (e.g. CardioMems). I hope to bring in leading cardiologists to talk about evolution in the field.
  2. The pathway into cardiology can be somewhat of a mystery, necessitating careers workshops for next year.
  3. Collaboration with SurgSoc Cardiothoracics to organise a combined conference with presentation opportunities.
  4. Using my contact network to promote research/mentorship opportunities.

I have extensive experience in roles of both leadership and teamwork (e.g. WPMN UCL lead) throughout my time at medical school, strengthening my intrapersonal and organisational skills. I hope to provide an engaging series of events/opportunities catering to students across all years.

Amelia L B Snook

Hi everyone! My name is Amelia (though some of you might know me as Millie)  and I am a year 2 medical student. I have been passionate about Cardiology for a long time, and ever since my placement aged  16 in NICU, the Labour ward, and general children’s wards, my enthusiasm has extended to Paediatrics. I was given the opportunity to shadow a paediatric neurosurgeon in Great Ormond Street last year and would love to help other students gain similar experiences, especially in Cardiology. I am a tennis coach to young children with experience teaching children with learning disabilities and have attended many talks held by MedSoc  over the last two years, so understand how I could increase participation and find a variety of speakers to talk to members of the society. I would love to explore the crossovers between specialties, and perhaps could help organise seminars with multiple members of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) to enable a greater understanding of the various roles involved in healthcare, especially of children, and how they collaborate with each other as a team. I am organised, determined and eager to work with others to increase involvement in the society, having been a Transition Mentor, Preclinical Representative for Women In Surgery (WinS) society for two years and Media Officer for Future Frontline (an organisation promoting roles in healthcare). I would like to select speakers who can have a further influence in the attendees’ careers, promoting work experience and mentorship as much as possible and

Karthig Thillaivasan

Hello, I'm Karthig Thillaivasan and I'd to take this opportunity to run for the Cardiology and Paediatric Cardiology Chair for UCL Medical Society. Having organised many large-scale events in various subcommittees of Medical Society, including the UCL National Paediatric Conference, I have developed an interest and motivation in various fields of medicine and most importantly got to grips with the responsibilities required to lead events. As the Cardiology and Paediatric Cardiology Chair, I'd have the opportunity to spread enthusiasm in this field and enable you to build a network with world-renowned cardiologists through the organisation of stimulating events, discussing current issues and future cardiological advances. One such future direction of Cardiology, is the use of AI and technology. As a member of MedTech Society, I gained experience in organising seminar-based events that discuss the importance of AI in Cardiology. Furthermore, I also intend to organise a Cardiology conference with various talks about topics such as tissue engineering, adult and congenital cardiology and career pathways. Finally, I would be very keen to fundraise for charities that support patients with cardiovascular disease and those in low-income countries. It would be a privilege to be a part of this society and I would be very grateful for your vote and I ensure to be a dedicated Cardiology and Paediatric Cardiology Lead, working hard to spread the enthusiasm through intriguing events.
