Spotlight, the workshop program, has given me a wonderful community and many learning opportunities. Yet having been both performer and director, the lack of support behind the program can be frustrating. In order to bring attention to this underrated part of the society, I propose the following:
- Restructure Spotlight and redefine its goals
- More cohesively integrate the “workshop” and “showcase” elements
- Scale down the showcase, focusing on doing well even if it means doing less
- Overhaul the showcase so that every participant gets an equal chance in the spotlight (ex. a jukebox-type performance with each numbers starring different performers)
- Introduce a new variety of workshops besides performance and production
- Creation (ex. feedback for original works, choreography, writing)
- Practical knowledge (ex. vocal health and maintenance, conflict management)
- Specialized workshops for specific skills (ex. stage violence, intimacy direction, particular vocal/dance techniques)
- Maintain clear communication
- Consistent updates via multiple platforms
- An interest form regarding what you would like to see in future workshops
- An anonymous feedback form for anything workshop-related (be given the freedom to safely voice your unfiltered opinion to someone that has the ability to do something about it)
I want to help you make the most of your MTSoc membership, and I want to prove that this society has more substance than just the big shows. If my ideas interest you, please consider voting for me!
Hi! My name is Laura W and I'm running for Workshops Officer of MT Soc!
Some ideas I have for changes in workshop organization next year:
- Tailor workshops to our members' wants & needs. At the start of each term or each month, send out a form or ask around for specific topics or aspects our society members are interested in or want to learn more about, then work out if the workshop could be held and how to execute it. We can both keep members engaged and provide useful information on different skills/aspects of production, such as prop design, marketing, bidding, makeup design, etc.
- Through reaching out, having connections and active communication, we should try to invite outside professionals/alumni to host workshops related to their expertise.
- Plan early and boost promotion/advertisement for workshops to increase attendance!
- Ask for people’s preference for workshop times each term to ensure attendance and try to adjust schedules—Wednesday afternoon / Sunday morning / other potential times so even members living far from the Blooms campus can attend workshops they're interested in
Why I'm standing:
- I'm VERY passionate about musical theatre!! I've been involved in school MT productions since primary school, and I have LOVED this art form ever since.
- I take projects and commitments seriously; I am responsible when it comes to organising activities, and I care about what members of MT want/like.
- I want to bring this community closer together with more fun workshops/events.
