Nishka Upadhya

My name is Nishka and I'm a first year (going into second)  BSc Global Humanitarian Studies Undergrad!! These last nine months have really taught me the importance of community and the social sphere within university, and I've had a really enjoyable experience across this year getting to know and build friendships within my cohort. So, having the opportunity to promote and further such a positive and engaging atmosphere within the society would be something I'm really interested in. I think socials, whether they are pub nights or more casual daytime, sober activities, are such an integral part to university life and an amazing way to bring the course(s) closer together, no matter differing interests. Therefore, I would love to experience being part of the team behind the scenes that allows such an important part of uni life to play out!

Bringing everyone together in such a fun way would be an unforgettable experience with long-lasting memories, and so, I'd really push for a low-effort, relaxed environment where everybody feels incorporated and welcomed, and where everyone can feel completely comfortable being themselves. I'm up for any activity and would love the chance to get to know the rest of the DRRH community and work with them to make such events happen in the future - with higher variety, creativity and fun. :)

Kayla Figgins

Hi I'm Kayla, a 1st year student (going into 2nd year) on the BSc course! I've really loved getting to know people across the cohort this year and becoming part of such a friendly community. I'd love to be one of your social secs next year to help create an atmosphere where everyone feels included and excited to come along to events. I think course socials are one of the best ways for people across different years and friendship groups to get to know each other better.

I'd love to organise a wider range of socials next year so there's something for everyone, whether that's pub nights, casual outings or fun sober socials too. I'd want events to feel welcoming and low-pressure so everyone feels comfortable joining in and meeting new people.

Overall, I'd love the opportunity to help make next year's society socials fun, varied and memorable for everyone and I'd enjoy working with the rest of the committee and wider society for new ideas! :)

Mollie Delahay

I want to help make the Disaster Risk Reduction and Humanitarian Society a more collaborative and welcoming space for everyone in the RDR department. One of the most valuable aspects of the society is its ability to bring people together around shared interests in humanitarianism, justice, and global issues; not only academically, but socially as well.

Having previously run for both Publications Officer and Communications Officer, I have remained committed to contributing because I value the community the society has created and the impact we have through our events. As Social Secretary, I would continue to focus on creating inclusive and engaging events that strengthen connections across year groups, whilst also providing opportunities to engage with academics and professionals in the humanitarian sector. I would aim to organise a mix of panel and social evenings, welfare-focused study sessions, volunteering opportunities, cross-society collaborations, and informal socials that help students meet like-minded peers.

Alongside this, I would prioritise consistent communication with our members and committee to ensure events feel accessible and welcoming to all. Through mentoring with Debate Mate, customer-facing leadership roles, and society involvement at university, I have developed strong communication skills that I believe I can bring to the role.

I want to help foster a society where students feel supported and genuinely engaged both socially and academically.

Sonia Khan

I am standing for Social Secretary because I want to help make DRRH feel genuinely welcoming, connected, and active as a student community. Disaster risk reduction and humanitarianism can sometimes feel like heavy or complex fields, so I think it is especially important that our society also creates spaces where students can build friendships, share ideas, and feel part of something supportive, rather than only academically engaged.

As Publications and Volunteering Officer, I have already seen how much potential DRRH has to bring students together around global issues. I would love to build on this by organising socials that make DRRH feel genuinely fun and connected, whether through relaxed coffee chats, film and craft nights, themed discussions, pub quizzes, fundraisers, or collaborative social events with other societies.

I would bring strong communication, organisation, and creativity to the role. Through my work as a UCL Student Storyteller, MAPS Digital Student Ambassador, and RDR Student Content Creator, I have experience engaging student audiences and making academic topics more approachable. I would use this to help make DRRH’s socials feel inviting for both committed members and students who are just beginning to explore humanitarianism and disaster risk reduction.

As a DRRH Social Secretary, I would work to make the society a warmer, more visible, and more connected community :)
