United Nations Association: Training Officer

As an interim-training officer, I was told that COVID brought our society to its knees. Though a shadow of its former self, all I see here is opportunity. The opportunity to rebuild better than before.

We hold the power to shape UCLUNA's future, starting with our vote.

In my 6 years of MUN, I've had the privilege to attend dozens of conferences as a delegate, chair and secretariat. I saw schools that would do anything in an attempt to sweep awards and schools that were just there for vacation. While admirable, that level of blinded competitiveness or apathy always felt wrong.

I don't want our society to be a toxically competitive cesspool of narcissists, nor the jokesters of MUN. Instead, I want us to be R.A.U.R.

My duty to you is to make UCLUNA: Respected, Admired, United and Resolute (RAUR).

I want others to respect our dedication to MUN as seen through our training and in turn performance in committees. I want us to win awards through lifting others up not pushing others down. We are diplomats, not savages.

I want delegations to admire our society, something that should be a source of pride for all of us.

To do this, we must be united as a society, and recognize that our strengths are each other.

Finally, we must be resolute and determined to become the change and success that we know we can be.

Being a training officer should never be seen as a position of power. It is instead a position of service. I will work tirelessly to ensure that together we can R.A.U.R.

Hello! I'm Brooke and I've been part of Model UN in some capacity since 2018. Here at UCL, MUN has provided me with a place to engage in insightful discussions, learn new skills, and just have a good time. It's been great serving as part of the interim training committee, and hopefully y'all will give me the chance to give back to the team as one of your new training officers.

As a training officer, I would focus on three areas:

1. More dynamic training sessions

I understand that every delegate may excel in different areas, and a one-size-fits-all approach to training doesn't work for everyone. Drawing from my experience as former USG of my high school MUN club and captain of parliamentary debate, I would incorporate public speaking drills and group work exercises to improve specific skills useful for conferences.

2. Diversification of types of committees

As someone who specializes in crisis, I believe I could offer a different perspective and diversify UCLUNA. Our team is very GA-oriented, so adding my crisis expertise to the set of skills of the leadership team would add new dimensions and take the UCLMUN team to new heights.

3. Open communication

I totally get how intimidating it can be to ask for help/advice. As training officer, I promise to always be around to answer questions and provide support for members. Whether you need ideas for a crisis arc, edits on your position paper, or just to rant about how your committee's going, I'm happy to help you through it all!

Having 5 years of MUN experience, 2 of those years as director of my previous highschool club, I will be able to orchastrate engaging, and informative sessionsd as a training officer. 

In my previousd experience, I created weekly resolutions and organized conferences. I ran public speaking workshops and crisis meetings in training sessions. So, I am very accustomed to having multiple responsibilities and I will be able to execute tasks effectively and quickly. I also enjoyed interacting with fellow members, actively engaging in contemporary issues through debate but also guiding them into persuing their MUN careers. With these qualities, I wish to be part of UNA's team, coming up with weekly activities and bolstering the society's administrative aspects. 

Yet I am versed both as a delegate and as a chair. I have been to NSHMUN in 2020 and Harvard MUN in 2021, as well as in numerous local conferences in Paris where I have won best delegate 3 times. With this background, I can further my efforts into aiding members preparing for conferences, and in debating and writing skills. As a chair in the UNESCO committee on the restitution of patrimony in my previous highschool, which I organized with my team, I had my first chairing experience and I hope to pursue this newfound passion through opportunities presented in UNA's team. 

I stand with the goal of not only expanding UNA in UCL but also globally by building on my previous experience by hopefully becoming part of UNA's team. 

I am thrilled about the opportunity that this position presents me to gain a deeper understanding of MUN beyond just being a Delegate. Since September, I have attended every training session. Also, I have taken charge of the logistics of sending teams from my Debate Society in Spain (Club de Debate UPO) to tournaments outside Seville, such as tournaments in Córdoba and Jaén. I have actively participated as a team captain in most of these tournaments as well, which has significantly boosted my ability to handle challenging situations. With my experience and determination, I am confident that I can make a noteworthy contribution by assisting with the logistics of TeamUCL and helping in the weekly sessions. I am eager and excited to learn more about UCL from an organizer's perspective and am ready to take on any challenge that comes my way.
