It’s my first year at UCL and my first on the competitive team, but I have plenty of experience leading successful teams. I’ve swum competitively most of my life - for almost fifteen years now. That experience has been capped off with multiple local, state, and regional championships.
I was captain of my school’s state-champion varsity swim team last year. I was not only tasked with representing the face of the team at our meets but also with managing the team on a day-to-day role. I helped the coaching staff with organising details of our training trip and state meet, in addition to leading practices, calling out sets, and keeping the team focused and organised. I was also captain of my school’s varsity cross country team, and I learned more about team leadership from that.
I also coached my local club team last summer, spending multiple hours a day in the water. This allowed me to hone my understanding of the fine points of swimming technique through multiple skill levels and see how basic form changes can impact even high-level swimmers. I learned how to build effective sets that combine being physically challenging with a focus on technique.
Having maintained a sports journalism job throughout school, I am fully prepared to devote the necessary time to this role. I will help the executive team with meet entries and other administrative tasks; offer an individual point-of-contact for each member of the team; and have practices prepared and printed whenever necessary.
You should vote for me because I have a strong passion for swimming and a lot of swimming experience. I have been swimming for over ten years, therefore, I have the expertise to create sets focusing on different aspects to improve your overall technique, making you swim faster. I've also swam at British Nationals, which involved a lot of tough training and drills to ensure I performed to the best of my ability. This has taught me a wide variety of drills, especially for freestyle, that can help with all strokes and benefit all swimmers. Additionally, I will find creative ways to make the sets enjoyable and mix the distances to concentrate equally on sprinters' and long-distance swimmers' abilities. I'm always happy for constructive criticism if I write a set that you think is boring. I will listen to what aspects individuals want to concentrate on to tailor the sets accordingly. I am very approachable and always up for a chat if you want to talk about anything; it doesn't have to be about swimming. Furthermore, I am organised and will be prompt in communicating relevant information to the team, ensuring everyone understands how to apply to specific competitions far in advance so we can turn up with as much of the team as possible. I will make coming to the sessions less of a chore and more of a hobby by keeping the sessions fun and engaging while maintaining a high standard of swimming during the sets to make sure that we are faster than Kings!!
