Philosophy Society : President

Hi everyone,

I'm Alex, a 3rd year Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) student from Denmark and the UK. Despite Philosophy nominally only making up 1/3rd of my degree, it's all I really study at the moment (having dropped Economics and chosen political philosophy modules). Ultimately, I plan on continuing my studies in Philosophy in hopes of teaching it at a university-level. 

I have experience running and founding societies at a high-school and university level. I was the founder and co-president of my school's Vexillological Society and the founder and president of UCL's Libertarian Society (which I must sadly disavow as it has become unrecognisable since my departure as President).

My main goal is to make the society an academic force to be reckoned with, while maintaining (and even improving) the society's social reputation. To improve the society's academic standing, I would get the ball rolling on making the Bentham Digest a proper philosophical journal, aligning ourselves with the department and external organisations to achieve this (much like how the UJE has become a proper economics journal). This will give contributors and editors of the Digest resources which they can draw upon to build up Philosophy portfolios to perfect postgraduate applications in Philosophy and move up the academic ladder. To this end and to maintain and improve upon the socials which members have enjoyed so much, I hope to productively collaborate with the newly elected senior team. 

- I have been in the committee of PhilSoc since 2020 as the treasurer. I have been involved in a lot of events, including co-holding the annual conference POLIS, the pub socials, philosophy chit-chats and movie nights. Therefore, I am familiar with the operation of PhilSoc.

- I am passionate about making PhilSoc a safe and cozy space for all students. With the previous president, we integrated the PhilSoc into the Student Union in a vision of making philosophy society more inclusive. I am excited for the way forward with the Union.

- I have been one of the two main points of contact for PhilSoc with the Society and the Union. If I am to be elected to be the President, there will be a seamless transition for the society.

- I have lots of exciting plans for PhilSoc! They include: regular guest lectures (I am trying to invite Zizek), lobbying for a philosophy ball at the end of the year, making philosophy chit-chat more accessible to all students from different specialisations, more pub socials!.

- I am always in the department. I am very down-to-earth and nice to talk to. Feel free to come to the philosophy undergraduate common room and strike a conversation with me about anything you want to suggest for the society!
