Aims:
- I plan to carry out a survey within the club of how inclusive members feel we are currently and ask for any suggestions as to how we can improve
- I would like to team up with a local outreach programme or state school to give students the opportunity to get involved in rowing when they may not otherwise have the chance- I realise this has been attempted in the past but I plan to find out why this has not been possible and take action to make it happen
- I want to encourage more non-drinking socials to involve everyone in the club and hopefully increase attendance at socials
- I would also like to have more inclusive events, for example, celebrating Eid or Diwali or Hanukkah as well as the normal Christmas social etc.
Experience:
- Rowing at RUMS last year showed me ways people were endeavouring to become more inclusive and ways that UCLBC can improve in this area
- I started rowing in year 12 at an independent school in Reading after being at a state school for 13 years prior. I was always frustrated I hadn’t started rowing earlier so I want to use our club's authority to introduce children in state schools to rowing as they will most likely not get the chance to try it out. 60% of rowers in the UK attended an independent or grammar school at some point in their school careers compared to only 7% in the general population and as a university with a high proportion of independent/ grammar school students, I believe this is something we should be trying to change
