As a First Year Representative, I hope to boost confidence and empower women to explore the financial industry. I am approachable, persistent, and committed to making a change. I will encourage discussions between like-minded individuals to create a collaborative community where we can learn from each other, and hope to promote the society through professional networking, engaging social activities and beneficial workshops. These will provide a strong basis to encourage more women to explore the financial field and act as a valuable assets when paving a career pathway. I understand that improvement relies upon effective communication and I will act as a bridge for first year students to channel concerns, feedback and suggestions towards the committee, in order to serve the change you want. Representation is a key initiative of mine and I am determined to highlight your student voice. I believe that I would be a good candidate because I have a keen interest in finance and am eager to target my skills into diversifying the industry.
The opportunity to join the UCL Women in Finance Society as a First-Year Representative is truly exciting for me because I believe women are often marginalised and need greater empowerment to pursue this field. Being one of only two girls in my economics classes and the only female editor of Cosmos Magazine (an economics and politics publication) in high school motivated me to challenge that imbalance and encourage more female voices in male-dominated fields.
As Deputy Executive Editor and Social Media manager of Cosmos Magazine, Media Strategist at the non-profit Good4Trust, and Outreach Coordinator on my school’s Sustainability Council, I strengthened my communication, content creation, and social media management skills. Remarkably, I boosted Good4Trust’s Instagram follower count by 13.6% in 6 months, achieving the broader goal of reaching a wider audience. Further on my school’s Sustainability Council, I built a collaboration program connecting younger and older students, encouraging dialogue, engagement, and mentorship.
I am eager to bring these experiences to WinF, especially in the Marketing, Relations, and Outreach divisions, to connect with members, promote activities such as the ‘Share the Vision’ conference, and unite more women to ensure finance remains an inclusive industry.
I’m interested in becoming a first year representative for the UCL WIF society because I know how challenging it can be applying for finance roles as a woman, simply because there are so few women doing the same. Therefore I am eager to do everything I can to break down some of these barriers through getting involved with the society by reaching out to banks and actively finding and creating opportunities to help women break into finance.
I enjoy taking initiative as is hopefully reflected by my experiences, such as raising money for students in the Gambia, and planning events as a member of my head student committee in Sixth Form, all of which taught me how to organise, communicate, and work with others. I believe these transferable skills would be of great help when building vauable connections with sponsors and peers.
I really hope you consider me for this position as I am very passionate about women’s empowerment, and am committed to doing everything it takes to continue to grow and improve this society.
