Engineering Society: First Year Representative

My key motivation to be a Freshers rep is to bridge the gap between academics and social life by better utilising our student community. I particularly believe that the true strength of this role lies in peer support, so my aim is to help create further informal, low-pressure opportunities for freshers to connect with older students across the year. This would include events covering anything from: securing spring weeks and how us engineering students can leverage the skills we’ve developed to the finance and technology sectors to just an informal relaxed coffee hour. Knowing how daunting it feels starting first year and how awkward it is to try approach older students for advice, I hope this would allow every fresher to feel supported both socially and academically. Additionally, My strong communication and teamwork skills, coupled with my genuine enthusiasm for helping others, will highly support me in this. As the CFO for a Young Enterprise company, I greatly developed my abilities as an informal mediator. For example, I successfully negotiated a compromise between colleagues during major disagreements, which not only developed both my judgment and communication skills but also my decision making under pressure. As a freshers rep, I plan to use this to ensure students feel comfortable approaching me and giving me honest feedback so I can  help to foster an environment where they know that this feedback will easily be acted upon.

Beyond the equations and technical diagrams, true engineering is about building community and support. As a first-year Biochemical Engineering student, I am eager to contribute to a society that connects students across all disciplines, fostering collaboration, connection, and confidence. Starting university has shown me just how valuable a strong sense of community can be, it is a place where people can share advice, experiences, and encouragement. I want to help strengthen that connection between first-year students and the wider Engineering Society, ensuring our ideas and experiences are represented and heard. 

Through previous team projects and volunteer roles, I have developed strong communication and organizational skills. I am approachable, reliable, and always ready to listen — qualities I believe are essential for effectively representing my peers. Engineering is a network of ideas and people, where every discipline contributes a vital piece to the bigger picture. This diversity isn’t just a feature — it’s a strength that should be celebrated.  

Sure, first-year engineering can be challenging, but with the right people around you, it becomes an unforgettable experience. This is exactly what I hope to achieve through the society’s events — creating moments that inspire, motivate, and bring out the best in everyone. Even though the different disciplines in engineering give us different nametags, at the end of the day, we are all ‘Engineers’ working toward the same goal.

Hi everyone, I’m Rahul, a Mechanical Engineering student. I’m running to be the Engineering Society First-Year Rep as I’m passionate about engineering and collaboration. If I hadn’t picked Mech Eng, I probably would be studying CS or EEE. I am a confident speaker and good listener, so as First-Year Rep, I will be able to make a positive impact and improve the experience for all first-year engineers.

I have previous experience in leadership roles throughout my time at school, including being an Upper School Captain and also being the Deputy Secretary General of my school’s Model UN, where I was in charge of organising and running a conference with over 400 students from across the country and abroad. These positions have taught me how to work effectively as part of a team and organise events.

I look forward to helping create a sense of inclusion and community among all first-year engineering students by organising events for everyone. This role will also allow me to grow personally by taking on responsibility and developing skills like communication and problem-solving, which are invaluable.

I am excited to collaborate with engineers of all disciplines, meet new people and contribute to improving the experience of first-year engineers academically and socially. I would love the opportunity to make the society more connected and make sure the voices of all first-years are heard and valued.

Hi everyone! I’m Denzel from Indonesia, studying Mechanical Engineering, and I’m running to be your First-Year Student Representative for the Engineering Society.

I’m passionate about collaboration and improving our student experience. As your rep, I’ll make sure your voices are genuinely heard and acted upon, organising events that are not only exciting, but also help us grow as engineers.

As my school’s Vice President of Finance and camp organiser, I developed strong leadership and communication skills to listen, organise, and represent effectively. I’ve also volunteered at children’s hospitals and orphanages, leading fundraising and entertainment activities that taught me empathy, teamwork, and initiative, values I’ll bring to this role.

Tutoring high school students also honed my ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds, which is essential in a department as large and varied as ours.

When I’m not geeking out over Formula 1 or rockets, you’ll find me playing drums, piano, or guitar, or having a badminton match or quick Valorant game (hit me up if you play!). Don’t be shy, I’m always up for a chat!

If elected, I’ll ensure your concerns don’t vanish into the void of unanswered emails. I’ll keep a clear feedback loop with staff, represent your ideas in committees, and keep you updated on real progress.

My name is Sidharth Ajay Asoka, and I’m a first year Mechanical Engineering student. Like many of you, I’m passionate about exploring every corner of engineering, from aerospace to energy to biotechnology. I believe every discipline, no matter how big or small, deserves to be represented. At UCL, where we have such a diverse community of engineers, ALL OF YOU deserve to have your voices heard and your interests supported!

That’s why I’m running to be your First Year Representative for the Engineering Society.

Having lived between India, Japan, and the UK, my cultural experiences allow me to easily connect with everyone. I’ve served as a student mentor and prefect, supporting others academically and personally, and I’ve led projects like building an RC plane and founding a biomimicry magazine. My interests, fused with my passion for helping others, will make an effective candidate for this role.

As your rep, I’ll prioritize communication and accessibility by making my WhatsApp, email, and LinkedIn public so you can easily reach me. Coming to a new city as a fresher was scary. I still remember walking into my first engineering event alone, feeling unsure, and realising moments later that UCLES is all about support, collaboration, and growth. 

I want every first year to feel that same welcome and confidence from day one.

That’s why I’m committed to creating a community where we can connect with each other and grow together. My name is Paul Vincent Bezzina and I am a first year Electronic & Electrical Engineering student from Malta. I would like to be a first year representative since I believe I am good at getting feedback from people and from that proposing suggestions on how best to take that feedback into consideration. Furthermore I am outgoing and have no problems with randomly approaching people to ask questions. 

Hi, I’m Emily, I’m a first-year chemical engineer. I’m standing for First Year Rep because I care about how we learn and support each other through this course. I also want to make sure we’re thinking about future opportunities early, not in a stressful way, but so we understand how to get involved.

One thing I value is developing skills outside the typical engineering sphere. For example, I’ve been using AE for video editing for over 3 years and it has taught me creativity, and problem solving. I want to encourage space for people to teach others, explore and share other skills, which are less commonly related to engineering, whether it’s design, digital art, editing or anything else. It makes us more well-rounded and confident, and it gives us more ways to contribute to group work and develop transferable skills (job crisis rn).

I’m very approachable and understanding! If there’s an issue or just something on your mind, I’m always happy to listen and help figure things out🧘🏻‍♀️.

I love talking.

I'm quite the cliche. I used to be the quiet kid. The kid who moved a lot, and would watch from the background while my extroverted sister took the spotlight. But along the way, I realized something simple.

I could tell you how my life experiences made me a good team player, communicator, and leader, basically the things you'd want from a “good” candidate. But honestly speaking, that's not why I'm running for this position. It's not for a reason so complex nor self-righteous. I'm running because I just want to talk to more people.

Over the years, I learned that I love talking to people. This realization made me come out of my introverted shell in middle school. Connecting with new people, sharing new stories, discovering new experiences - conversations with strangers are one of the world's greatest yet easiest forms of entertainment, education, stress-relief, and so much more, all in one. I hope that through my first year as a rep, I can share my love for talking.

As First Year Rep, my goal is to spread that love. I want people to see how easily discussion can help connect, represent, and support each other. There's one thing that I can undoubtedly promise: I will talk to you and hear you. No conversation too small, no interaction too awkward, no person too insignificant. If you need an ear for advice, criticism, validation, or just to vent. Whatever it may be, I wish to be the representative that everyone feels comfortable going to.
