Gender and Feminism Society: LGBTQ+ Representative

Hiya! My name is Tyler, and I am running for LGBTQ+ Rep because I adore GenFem as a society and think my experience in queer spaces with queer people to engage critically in queer media would make for a positive addition to the team! I'll forego the "as queer people, we get to choose our family" bit and speak about myself here; as an openly gay man, I'm very familiar with the interplay of queer issues with feminist and gender issues, particularly as it comes to intersectional discrimination and the representations that come from that. Being LGBTQ+ or an ally to the community often does not mean simply recognizing the issues which plague us but how those issues interact with other social structures like the patriarchy while also bringing forward art and media that protests those issues, even in very subtle ways. As LGBTQ+ Rep, I believe I can help moderate discussions on what understanding of those issues and arts means, help us all learn from each other with our own experiences and backgrounds, and serve as a direct interface with the rest of GenFem as well as its sister societies to keep safe spaces safe and maintain a welcoming standard of acceptance. There is no issue which only impacts one people, and as LGBTQ+ Representative I want to ensure the issues we talk about are approached holistically from every perspective, so everyone has the opportunity to speak and feel they are heard, whether they are queer or ally, as we all deserve a chance to learn and share.

Hi yall,

I'm nominating myself for LGBTQ+ rep this year. I'd like to support Genfem's  committee in its mission to make UCL a more inclusive and equal university by providing an important space for  conversation, education, and community. As LGBTQ+ Rep specifically, I want to ensure all feel welcome, included and heard. My aim is to ensure that events cater to queer people and perspectives, that bigotry or TERFism are absent from our spaces, and that all members can come forward with any concerns to make sure the society is run fairly. As a queer man, I'm particularly hoping to open conversations about the intersection between misogyny and homophobia, the prevalent misogyny within the gay male community, as well as the experience of queer women and trans people. I'd also like to further foster our relations with other queer actors in the UCL student life, such as the LGBTQ+ Network, the Trans Network and DragSoc. 

Looking forward to further partcipating in Genfem, whether it be as a member or hopefully as your newly elected LGBTQ+ Rep!

As a queer woman of color, I’m very passionate about ensuring our community is not just inclusive but truly safe and welcoming for everyone. My goal as the LGBTQ+ Rep is to create a space where everyone—regardless of gender or sexual identity—feels supported, heard, and respected. I want to be a reliable point of contact for anyone who has concerns, wants to raise an issue, or simply needs someone to talk to. Over the years, I’ve been involved in various LGBTQ+ societies and spaces, and these experiences have shaped my understanding of what it means to build a supportive environment. From organizing events and panels to holding discussions, I’ve had the opportunity to help create spaces where LGBTQ+ voices are amplified and celebrated. I hope to bring those same skills to the Gender and Feminism Society, helping to plan and implement events that highlight queer voices and foster meaningful conversations about inclusion and justice. I care deeply about being part of this society because it allows me to work alongside others who are committed to creating positive change. It also gives me a platform to advocate for underrepresented voices, particularly those at the intersection of gender, sexuality, and race. I'm excited to work together to create a space where everyone can thrive and be their authentic selves.
