I am eager to stand as Head of Events for the Diplomacy Society because I am passionate about creating impactful and engaging experiences for students interested in international affairs. I have already collaborated with the society, co-organizing events like the upcoming one at the Italian Embassy, which has given me valuable experience and insight into managing high-profile events with diplomatic figures. As a Politics and International Relations student, I am committed to fostering meaningful dialogues and connecting students with influential leaders. If elected, I plan to organize events in collaboration with the Italian Society, featuring prominent political and diplomatic figures, to deepen our society’s engagement with global issues.
I’m running for Head of Events because I want to bring fresh and exciting ideas, raise awareness on diplomatic and current affairs and expand the society's network.
My goal is to bring in top-tier speakers, to collaborate with other university societies, and give members the chance to connect with diplomats, political analysts, and students from around the world.
I would love to organise events that bridge diplomacy with other disciplines such as Law or Technology, AI: for example, a "Diplomacy & Innovation Competition", where teams of students collaborate on projects that explore how technology can solve global challenges.
More generally, I would love to implement competitive events between students that tackle real-world challenges, hopefully collaborating with diplomats to offer the winning team an appealing prize.
I’m also keen to create opportunities for mentorship programs, where first-year students can be paired with upper-year students or alumni and professionals in diplomacy for career guidance.
Collaborating with Think Tanks, Research Institutes and partnering with NGOs would also be one of my top priorities. Having a Diplomacy Career Day for example, would be a great occasion for such collaborations to lead to internship opportunities for Diplomacy students.
If you want a Head of Events who’s focused on creating career-boosting opportunities as well as fun and interactive events, I'd love your support!
Hello Diplomacy Society! My name is Joe Yiu Ip. I am a first-year Politics and International Relations student. I was born in the UK to a family from Hong Kong. I am greatly interested in diplomatic relations and advancing participation in international affairs.
I want to bring further events for the society involved with our flagship diplomatic journal “The Diplomacy Review” such as:
- Workshops in journalism specifically on reporting on current affairs such as writing and research skills.
- Gaining speakers in that sector where they can provide insight into the ever-changing geopolitical space and world of journalism.
- Bolster cross-university events and collaborate with societies across London and within UCL, to create a space for dialogue with other like-minded students and prominent speakers with our combined strengths.
- More collaborative events which take place on the UCL campus will take priority, giving further accessibility to students and better times for commuting students.
Previous experience
- Welfare President at my Sixth Form where I coordinated charity events for over 1,400 students; logistics, procurement, and on-the-day communication.
- A founding member of the newspaper as Creative Director; held meetings, communicated among team members, and wrote articles that required liaising with staff and organised groups such as political parties.
And I would advocate for more snacks for everyone at events! I hope to give further info at hustings (more than 1500 characters at least)
Dear Diplomacy Society,
My name is Emma Vidal de Saintignon and I am running for the position of Head of Events.
As a second-year student in Politics and International Relations, and as an aspiring diplomat, I am deeply passionate about sharing the positive impact that skilled diplomacy can have on global politics. I believe that we are at a time of fracture in international relations, which makes it even more important for UCL students to have an outlet in which they can engage with current issues without the biases and stress of mainstream media.
Being part of the Diplomacy society as a member for over a year and having participated in many events has given me a strong sense of the expectations members have as to the quality and content of events.
As a head of event, I would make sure to organise a large variety of events to give members insight as to the diverse career paths available in diplomacy. Today’s political landscape offers exciting and innovative opportunities, from geopolitical foresight to roles focused on technology and environmental issues- fields that may interest first- and second-year students as they start considering internships and refining their academic and career goals.
Some of the events I found most inspiring from last year, and that I would like to build upon, were those targeted at developing skillsets. I would develop this by organising workshops with professionals to teach us about a particular skillset, whether it be speech, critical thinking, or analytical methods.
As someone with a
Hi, Diplomacy Society!
I'm Alessandra Jia Pan—some might call me Alessandra, though most people simply know me as Jia (I have yet to settle on how I should introduce myself!)—and I am a First Year PIR Student, member of the Design Team for The Diplomacy Review.
I am running for Head of Events because I believe I am an energetic and hard-working individual who has what it takes to fulfil this role adequately. I bring relevant experience to my candidacy:
- I have been the main point of reference in AFS for exchange students in Sicily, managing host family allocations, conducting family visits and interviews;
- I organised welcome events for local and foreign students and aided their integration by ensuring translations from French, Chinese, and English into Italian;
- I hosted workshops that combated discrimination against ethnic minorities in Sicily;
- I worked with Partito Democratico during the European Elections by opening Senator Antonio Nicita's campaign with speeches representing the student community on issues such as lack of funds in Southern Italy, water scarcity, and immigration policies.
Most importantly, I am very passionate about connecting with people, whether it is with guest speakers or the very members of our society. I thrive in social settings and value listening to different perspectives, as I believe collaboration and feedback are essential in organising engaging and memorable events!
If you entrust me with this role, I will be sure to live up to your expectations!
