"In a world where man-made technology can rewrite our DNA, where do we draw the line between healing and enhancement? And who decides?"
As scientific advances accelerate, the line between innovation and ethical boundaries blurs, yet informed debate often lags. The reality is that bioethics impacts everyone, dictating our health, privacy & fundamental human rights. At UCL, we’re at the forefront of these transformations, yet without deeper understanding, how can we lead?
I’ve grappled with these questions firsthand as a master's student in Cell & Gene Therapy. From working in CRISPR research on genetic diseases both locally and internationally to publishing articles on organoids as brain models and AI-driven healthcare access, I’ve seen and am learning both the promise of science and its ethical dilemmas. These aren’t just abstract issues; they demand responsible, passionate leadership—something I am committed to providing.
As a woman of colour, I understand the weight of such conversations on a personal level, having seen how discussions and action around bioethics can sometimes be met with hesitancy or stigma in my community. I am deeply motivated not only to participate in these essential exchanges but to ignite them—to bring forward conversations that resonate, challenge, and inspire people across disciplines. Together, we have the chance to shape a future where progress and ethics move in tandem, redefining the boundaries of bioethics with clarity, courage, and inclusivity.
Hi! I’m Bushra :)
I’m an MRes Translational Neuroscience student, and I’m currently working on gene therapy for drug-resistant epilepsies. I’m also very interested in policy work, particularly initiatives to foster community and support marginalised groups, as well as nature conservation and sustainability! I’m super excited to run for VP and support our lovely President as I feel (bio)ethics are a cornerstone for our humanity, and we have a responsibility towards creating a better world. As technology becomes more innovative, we need to keep in sight our ethical boundaries and continuously weigh the benefits and costs of development.
I have a ton of ideas for exciting events encompassing the broad range of ethical themes present in the STEM field (as well as how these have a follow-on effect on external industries and individuals, as everything is so interconnected!) I’m also eager to hear from society members about their interests in bioethics and what topics and events they’d like us to hold. I’m looking forward to integrating feedback and making events more engaging, dynamic, and interactive!
