Zarak Afzal

I’d like to run for Secretary of the 93% Club because I genuinely connect with its goals and values. Coming from a state school background, I’ve experienced some of the challenges that many of us face in university environments that often seem geared towards those from private or more privileged schools. Being part of this club has helped me find a supportive community, and now I’d love to contribute more by helping with its day-to-day running.

I also have some relevant experience that I think would make me a good fit for the role. During my gap year, I worked as a company secretary assistant at an accounting firm, where I handled tasks like taking minutes during meetings, managing admin work, and staying on top of communications. These skills would allow me to help keep the club organised and ensure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes.

I look forward to this possible opportunity to support the 93% Club in a more active role and to give back to a community that’s already given so much.

Ellen Pear

My name is Ellen and I'm in my final year studying French and Spanish. My main motivation for nominating myself comes from a genuine passion for everything that the 93% club stands for. I discovered the society towards the end of my second year, and the personal value that this gave me in realising that there is a supportive community of people at UCL that weren't born into pre-established networks either has been unparalleled. Representation is key, and I would love to help to propel outreach. I can only imagine how much easier my university experience would have felt if I had been part of the 93% club from the beginning, and I am committed to giving back in some way in my final year.

I am a great fit for the role of secretary because:

  •  I am very organised: I have been a team leader at a charity working with disabled children for three years, which means I am well-accustomed to organising paperwork as well as the general running of each day.
  • I have built strong communication skills: in my role, I also spend lots of time liaising with parents and carers, working to communicate in creative and different ways to suit an audience with a range of needs.
  • I will ensure that others like us can integrate into such a valuable community at an earlier stage.

Most importantly, I know how to be a passionate advocate for a cause that I believe in wholeheartedly. I hope to be able to transfer these skills to represent another cause that I care about!
