Welcome to the International Development Society!
Why are some countries rich and others poor? Which factors shape the different patterns and levels of development between countries? Why does poverty persist? How should we approach "development"? Which methods/strategies are most ideal?
If these questions interest you alongside keywords such as International Development, Economic Development, Grassroots Development, Human Development, Global Inequality, Sustainable Growth, Emerging Economies/Developing Countries/LMICs and Humanitarian Assistance (and much more...), this society is for you!
Our goal is to provide space for members to engage with international development in all its complexity. We take a holistic approach to the field of development by providing a platform for members to learn, discuss, and apply their ideas. With the Standard Membership of £3 members can enjoy all that the UCL ID Society offers. You'll have access to:
- Partnerships with actual UK-based charities
- Monthly Talks from Guest Speakers
- Our Student Journal, where you can share your ideas on ID related issues/topics
- Seminars, debates and discussions
The UCL ID Society welcomes all students! Even if you’re new to the topic and simply curious to learn more, you’re more than welcome to join us! Check out our instagram for more information.
Our Partnership with Self Help Africa:

We are excited to announce that in the 26/27 academic year the UCL International Development Society will be working in partnership with Self Help Africa.
Self Help Africa is an international development charity working across Africa to tackle poverty, hunger, inequality and the impacts of climate change. Through community-led and enterprise-focused approaches, they work with local communities and partners to promote sustainable livelihoods, resilient food systems, decent employment, access to essential services and inclusive economic development. Their work spans areas including agriculture and nutrition, gender equality, climate resilience, enterprise development, microfinance and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH).
