Many of today’s biggest scientific and societal challenges do not fit neatly within a single discipline. Increasingly, tackling them requires people who can work across traditional subject boundaries.
Biophysics is one of the clearest examples. It brings together physics, biology, chemistry, engineering and medicine, with connections to areas such as ethics, policy and law. But for students, building an interdisciplinary background is not always straightforward: if you study physics, how do you develop biological depth? If you come from biology, how do you build a physicist’s quantitative toolkit?
The UCL Biophysics Society exists to help bridge that gap. We aim to make biophysics more visible within undergraduate student life at UCL and create a welcoming community for anyone interested in interdisciplinary science.
Alongside lectures, workshops and research-focused events, we also want to experiment with more creative forms of science communication, from student publications to projects such as a biophysics fashion show, that make complex scientific ideas accessible and memorable.
What we have planned
- Get Your Own Microfluidic Chip: Visit us at our Welcome Fair stalls, learn how microfluidic devices are used in biophysics research, and take home your own mini microfluidic chip.
- Biophysics Skills Workshop Series: Have you ever started a Coursera course and forgotten to finish it? Rest assured, the Biophysics Society is your new accountability partner! Build new skills through structured workshops and collaborative study groups. Members will work through courses and resources from platforms such as Coursera and MIT OpenCourseWare, learning together, staying motivated, and, where available, working towards recognised course certificates.
- Write & Communicate Science: Contribute to our student-written Insider Review, introducing current research, university science and STEM careers to students considering science at university. Members can write, edit and help shape future editions.
- Lectures & PhD Panels: Hear directly from researchers working across biophysics, biomedical science and related fields, and join informal PhD panels exploring postgraduate study, research careers and life in the lab.
- Socials, Pub Quizzes & Prizes: Biophysics does not have to stay in the lab! Expect relaxed socials, pub quizzes, team challenges and prizes throughout the year.
Our purpose is simple: to make interdisciplinary science easier to explore and to create a community where students from different backgrounds can learn from one another, build new skills, and confidently navigate across disciplines.
