In the past few weeks, we’ve seen the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown in action, with outdoor sports and gyms being some of the first activities prioritised. It’s no surprise that this is the case, with the countless benefits to mental and physical health that sports and physical activity bring.
There have been countless studies on the benefits of physical activity, which have shown that physical activity can increase self-esteem, reduce stress and anxiety, help prevent mental health problems and in general improve one’s quality of life. e.g. there is an approximately 20–30% lower risk for depression and dementia, for adults participating in daily physical activity.
We’re offering loads of opportunities for students that are in London to take part in sports and get active, whether you want to attend by yourself, with friends or with a sports club. Here are a few ways to get involved:
TeamUCL Leagues
The TeamUCL sports leagues are a great way to make friends and compete in a friendly but competitive sports league. I’ve been playing in the football leagues and it’s been a whole load of fun, helped me get fit and relieve stress from all the online meetings and zoom fatigue, I can’t wait for them to be restarted again in term 3!
They’re available for all abilities too which is great and there’s not entry requirements, you just have to be at UCL! (and not have covid). I’m especially looking forward to dodgeball leagues this term.
Bloomsbury Fitness
The struggle of being so inactive during the last 3 months has taken a massive toll on me and my body, and for loads of other students too. The re-opening of the our gym, Bloomsbury Fitness, has been a great in helping me get back in shape and improving my confidence!
Nothing feels better than struggling with just the bar and being extremely sore for a week after an intense chest workout, so if you’re in the area make sure you join the gym!
These aren’t the only options when it comes to getting active during 3rd term, why not join a sports club, you can check the what’s on calendar to see which ones are back in action!
There’s also the smaller social leagues, project active classes and loads more! Feel free to reach out to me or anyone at the union for any questions that you might have ?
