Choosing optional modules is an exciting part of the student journey, but it can also be challenging. Students often make decisions based on limited information, without the opportunity to experience teaching style, content delivery, or learning approaches in advance.

Sarah, your Education Officer, has been championing the Student Lecture Preview Initiative in an attempt to address this. Developed by Sarah, in collaboration with the Media Environments Team, the student-led initiative aims to provide short lecture videos that enable students to explore optional modules and gain valuable insight before making their selections.

What is the initiative?

A video library of short 5–15 minute lecture previews for optional modules will be developed. These previews will be created from existing lecture recordings in Panopto, edited down and shared with students through a centrally managed space such as Moodle.

Why does this matter?

For students, lecture previews can:

  • Provide a sense of teaching style and learning experience
  • Support confident and informed module decisions

How you can support

You can support this initiative by getting in touch with module leads now. Their participation would involve submitting a sample lecture recording, to allow for 5-15 minute lecture previews to be made available to students. This will mean that when it comes to choosing modules in April, you'll be able to make informed decisions about which options best align with your learning preferences and interests.

When getting in touch with module leads, you can share this article and direct them to this form to enable them to take part. You can also ask your academic reps to raise this at their Student Partnership Committees.
