The Volunteering Service hosted their first Student-Led Volunteering Co-creation Event on Thursday 6 June where local charities had the chance to discuss ideas for community projects with UCL students, in the hopes of creating a new Student-Led Volunteering Project.

Students had the chance to talk to representatives from  Aston-Mansfield, Age UK Kensington and Chelsea, The Royal Society of Sculptors, Carnaval del pueblo  and CenterPoint.

The event consisted of a round of speed networking followed by general networking over dessert and tea. At the end of the event each student selected the charity they would like to work with.  These students will now be supported by the Volunteering Service to develop and deliver these projects in the new academic year.

This co-creation event was a huge success with 90% of the students expressing that the overall usefulness of this event was good or very good. One student said “Really unique opportunity to meet charities I wouldn’t have otherwise, and gave me new inspiration.”

The charities were blown away with how engaged and keen the students were. One said, when asked what could be done better next time, “More students please!!!” They also said that the event was attended by “students who really want to make a project happen – really engaged…this has been absolutely fantastic, thank you so much!”

This is the first event of this nature and due to its success, there is sure to be another one but in the meantime why not check out our existing projects for inspiration, and remember if you have an idea you can create your own community project.
