Recognising the achievements of our diverse, global community of staff, students and partners – past and present - Faces of UCL uncovers some of our unsung heroes alongside more renowned figures as we celebrate 200 years of UCL. Read on to explore Lewis Murphy's story.

Lewis has always been an extracurricular student, taking part in school shows and choir, and organising the prom. He quickly did the same when he joined UCL, becoming President of the Stage Crew Society and Arts Officer for Students’ Union UCL, and designing the lighting for student-led productions at the Bloomsbury Theatre.

He still remembers his pre-show nerves and excitement before Rent, the first performance he ever worked on: “In what other university can a student do lighting design for a show in a West End level theatre?”

As Arts Officer, he was part of a tiny team and running the ArtsUCL Instagram page from his phone. Now an established brand and thriving creative community, ArtsUCL has come a long way, thanks in part to Lewis’ dedication. His recalls his proudest achievement - organising the 2023 Arts Ball, which reunited arts societies post-Covid and drew over 400 attendees. That same year, he hosted the Arts Awards at Bloomsbury Theatre. It was a full-circle moment; he was now standing on the stage instead of lighting it.

Lewis now works as an Activities Administration Coordinator, supporting student leaders in running clubs and societies and helping to improve the student experience across the university. For Lewis, UCL’s strength lies in its diverse and supportive community:

The impact is not diluted by its size. If anything, it is, it's strengthened. It’s about looking after each other and pushing each other to be the best versions of ourselves.
