Student Volunteering Week, 10 - 16 February, is a national celebration where universities and schools across the country step up to organise opportunities and events to celebrate students who have volunteered as well as encourage more of their students to volunteer and help local communities.

During this week, we’ll be hosting a variety of engaging events, check below for these volunteering opportunities and sign up to make the most of the week!

Volunteering has a lasting impact—not just on those you help, but on yourself too. Studies have shown that engaging in volunteer work can improve mental health, reduce stress, and foster a sense of purpose. It’s a win-win situation! By giving back to your community or working on a community project, you’re not only helping others but also benefitting your own well-being.

 Why Volunteering Matters at UCL

At UCL, volunteering is more than just an extracurricular activity—it’s a chance to make a meaningful difference while gaining valuable experiences, skills, and connections. This week is all about shining a light on the diverse and impactful ways UCL volunteers support local charities to tackle global challenges.

Whether you’ve volunteered before or just starting to explore the possibilities, the Student Social Impact team has something for everyone. It’s an opportunity to get involved, learn new things, and create lasting positive change as well as a great way to build your CV, enhance your employability, and develop key transferable skills such as communication, problem-solving, and teamwork. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to meet like-minded people, connect and give back to the local community.

How UCL Students Are Making a Difference

At UCL, we believe in the power of collective action. This week, we are highlighting some incredible projects that showcase how our students are giving back. From participating in environmental campaigns to helping at food banks, UCL volunteers are at the heart of meaningful change.

Our students are continuously making a difference, through a variety of initiatives. One of our standout initiatives are our Big Help Outs, which brings together UCL students to support communities in need. These events are all about giving back, whether it’s helping in local food banks, cleaning up green spaces, or supporting charities.

UCL volunteers have had the chance to get their hands dirty, literally, while helping plant trees and supporting local green spaces. These projects not only helping the environment but also fostering a sense of community and collective responsibility.
