Community volunteering can help you develop new skills and connect with communities outside of academia. This practical session – led by the Volunteering Service – will cover what’s on offer and how to get involved.

We'll look at volunteering in the context of research impact and public engagement, as well as the benefits to your own skill development and well-being, and its connections to your own values and interests. We'll hear about PhD students who have participated in previous projects working with community groups.

We'll cover the range of types of volunteering on offer, how to find something that matches your own skill, experiences and aspirations.

Learning outcomes:

  • Have a better understanding of how volunteering can complement academic research
  • Have a better understanding of how to find relevant volunteering projects
  • See how volunteering can support you in your personal development
  • See how volunteering can support your own wellbeing and sense of connection
