Crafternoon in the Museum of Zoology

Origami + Zoology Museum + a social cause = a whale of a time πŸ‹

Hi creative creatures! For one afternoon only, come with us to the UCL Grant Museum of Zoology to learn how to make origami animals, and create cot mobiles for children's wards at a local hospital.

No creative experience needed! This workshop is suitable for all: you'll learn everything you need on the day.

This event is a collaboration between the Social Impact Team and two of UCL's wonderful Student-led Community Projects:

  • The folding will be led by the Origami Volunteering Project. These students volunteer weekly by teaching Origami to children in hospitals and older adults in care homes, providing stress-relief and a creative outlet.
  • And the mobiles will be donated by the UCL Hospital Fun Team to the Royal Free paediatric wards to bring some joy to the hospital environment. Our volunteers go onto these wards every week to help create a sense of normality and play for the children, and by taking part in this workshop, you'll be adding to this!

To get you excited, here's the Pinterest vision:

You'll also get to explore the Museum afterwards

The Grant Museum is home to 100,000 specimens from every continent, every ocean, and every animal group, and after the Craft workshop, you'll get a guided tour of this fascinating space*. Inspired by the thousands of animals surrounding the tables, you'll be folding flamingos, crafting crustaceans and assembling armadillos.

* the tour of the Museum will happen after the creative workshop at 2:30-3pm!

What is a Crafternoon?

Crafternoons are fun one-off volunteering opportunities that involve doing an enjoyable creative activity for a good cause. It’s all about small actions making a difference to your local community, learning a new skill and meeting new people. At our events, you’ll always find friendly student and staff faces to make sure you feel welcome and supported.

Two hours of creativity for a good cause

For this event, we ask that people stay for the whole workshop, as the first half will be folding the Origami animals, and the second half will be assembling the mobiles. If you've been to a Crafternoon before, they're often more flexible or drop-in by nature, but for this one, we'll start at 2pm!
