Come along and help brighten an older people's residence, whilst making intergenerational connections!
Brighten up a local sheltered housing scheme and make a meaningful difference in the community surrounding UCL East. Join fellow students to give a gorgeous shared garden a glow up, helping to create a more vibrant and welcoming space for residents. The Ruscoe Road Sheltered Housing Scheme will host this activity - they support older residents to stay active, connected, and engaged in their local community. We visit them every month, so this is a great chance to establish longer-term social connections with local older people and see the impacts of your hard work in the garden over time! This will only be our second visit, so come along and get stuck in!
Alongside the volunteering activity, you'll have the opportunity to chat with residents, take part in creative activities together, and build connections across generations. This will be a really exciting chance to meet long-term residents of the neighbourhoods surrounding UCL East, and to help reduce isolation among the older generation of East-Londoners.
Lunch will be provided as part of this volunteering activity!
What’s a Big Help Out?
Big Help Outs are fun one-off volunteering opportunities that involve a big group. It's all about small actions creating big change when we work together. At our events, you’ll always find friendly student and staff faces to make sure you feel welcome and supported.
What will we be doing?
You'll be given all the supplies to help paint some planters in the residents' garden. You'll get to do this together as a team of students, and then head inside to join the older residents for some intergenerational socialising! You'll get to share stories over a cup of tea, and engage in creative activities if you wish.
Why Join in?
- Meet people from completely different walks of life - Connect with local residents, hear their stories, and build meaningful relationships across generations.
- Take a break from studying and do something mindful - Spend a few hours painting planters, trying something hands-on, and helping to brighten a shared community space
- Make a positive impact locally - Give back to the community around UCL East and make someone's day through just one conversation!
