Did you write about a popular science book in your personal statement? Have you ever wondered how scientists write them? Now, you will get to ask the author himself about the creation story of one at our joint Book Club with ZooSoc!

Professor Max Telford is going to talk about his book, The Tree of Life: Solving Science’s Greatest Puzzle. He is the Jodrell Chair of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy at the Department of Genetics, Evolution, and Environment.

This workshop revolves around one question:

How do you write a coherent story about the tree of life when our understanding of evolution is constantly changing?

Not only is the Tree of Life itself “Science’s Greatest Puzzle”, but the process of writing the book is one too. Together, we are going to examine extracts from the book. Deduce the evidence he used to support his arguments. Discuss who he is writing for, and what appeals to them. Confirm your hypotheses with the author himself. At the end, we will also play a game to put together a mini tree of life.

If you are fascinated by evolution, interested in science communications, or simply a fan of Professor Telford, tag along to the Book Club and have some fun!
