Are you interested in visiting the UK's second city, soaking up the festive atmosphere at the largest authentic German Christmas market outside of Germany and Austria, and exploring the tranquil canals and green spaces nestled within England's post-industrial heartland? Then our trip to Birmingham is just right for you!
About Birmingham
Once the smoky "workshop of the world" during the Industrial Revolution, the birthplace of the Steam Engine, the Mini and the humble bicycle bell. Now reinvented as a cultural hub, known for its street art, live music, and sprawling greenspace, Birmingham is a bucket list destination attracting a global crowd of visitors.
Digbeth
The historical Centre of Birmingham, built up into large industrial complexes during the Industrial Revolution with factories often spanning blocks, Digbeth is now undergoing a regeneration project, with the BCC set to move its regional headquarters there in the coming years. Walking through the gritty streets of Digbeth, you'll find a canvas for some of Britain's most famous street artists, such as Annatomix, Gent48 and Banksy, as well as independent cafes, shops and design businesses.

Canal Quarter
Did you know that Birmingham boasts more canals than Venice? Built to transport goods and power 18th- and 19th-century factories, the canals are now crammed with Birmingham's best restaurants and pubs. It's the perfect place for a scenic stroll. If you're feeling particularly adventurous, take a 45-minute walk from Gas Street Basin to the University of Birmingham or the Botanical Gardens.

Birmingham's Frankfurt Christmas Market
With over 100 stalls, festive entertainment, and the backdrop of Birmingham’s beautiful Victoria Square, Birmingham’s Christmas market maintains the authentic vibe of the German Weihnachtsmarkt. Together we'll dig into lots of pretzels, bratwurst and pastries and warm ourselves up with gluhwein and hot chocolate.

Additionally, a full guide and interactive map of suggestions, including must-see landmarks, free museums, green spaces, and places to eat and drink, will be provided to all students joining us!
