Platypus Cinema presents...

Swinging Sixties: Youth in Rebellion Triptych

WEEK 2: Battle of Algiers (1966) dir. Gillo Pontecorvo

The 1960s are often remembered as a decade of youthful rebellion, political upheaval and revolutionary possibility. But what did these struggles mean, and what became of their ambitions? Through Medium Cool (1969), El Grito (1968) and The Battle of Algiers (1966), this screening triptych explores the divergent experiences of youth confronting authority, organising resistance and attempting to transform the world around them.

Reflecting Platypus' interest in the history and problems of the Left, we revisit a period shaped by the emergence of the New Left, anti-colonial movements and student radicalism. The series culminates in a panel discussion on Students and the Left, bringing these historical questions into the present. What role have students played in the history of the Left? What happened to the radical ambitions of the 1960s student movements? And what possibilities, if any, remain for student politics today?

Rather than treating youth as a unified political force or rebellion as inherently revolutionary, we invite audiences to consider the historical possibilities and limitations of a generation in revolt.

There will be a 10 -15 minute introduction before each film outlining given contexts and encouraging the audience to engage with the film from a Platypus perspective.

Come along, there will snacks!
