Get up to speed on Earth System science, with an interactive workshop about planetary boundaries. This workshop will expand your understanding about the environmental pressures on our planet. After the workshop join a train-the-trainer session to run it yourself.

Planetary Boundaries 101 is an interactive, collaborative workshop that helps participants understand the Earth’s key life-support systems and the limits within which humanity can safely operate. Using a set of illustrated cards, participants work together to reconstruct the scientific framework of planetary boundaries — including climate change, biodiversity loss, land use, freshwater, and chemical pollution — and explore how these systems are interconnected.

Rather than a lecture, this Fresk-style workshop is a hands-on learning experience. Through discussion and collective problem-solving, you will build a shared picture of how human activities affect the planet, where we are already exceeding safe limits, and why crossing these boundaries increases the risk of large-scale environmental disruption. The workshop is accessible to all disciplines and does not require any prior scientific knowledge.

Students and staff should attend because the Planetary Boundaries 101 offers a clear, systems-level understanding of sustainability challenges that is directly relevant to studies, careers, and everyday decision-making. It creates space to ask big questions, connect scientific knowledge to social and economic systems, and reflect on what a sustainable future could look like. Whether you are new to sustainability or already engaged with environmental issues, the Fresco provides a powerful framework for understanding the scale, urgency, and interconnected nature of the challenges we face — and your role within them.
