Our FIRST RESIDENTIAL of the year is finally here 😱‼ UCL Hiking Club is proud to present our biggest residential trip ever!! This year, from 1st to 4th November (3-night stay!), we are taking 60 hikers to the lush autumnal valleys of the Yorkshire Dales 🏔🍂! With striking caves, waterfalls, ancient barns and stunning stone walls, the Dales are an immaculate blend of nature and heritage 🍃⛺, perfect for nature lovers and hikers eager to take on a bigger challenge! 🥾🌾

The Yorkshire Dales:

  • Magnificent countryside with striking caves, waterfalls, and mountains!
  • Lush green valleys (known locally as "dales") crested with white cliffs ("scars")!
  • Limestone pavements cutting through wilder uplands beneath towering peaks of dark millstone grit!
  • Fields and pastures are bounded by distinctive drystone walls which criss-cross the hillsides in elaborate patterns!

Our Accommodation:

UCL Hiking Club has exclusively hired an entire hostel with 60 beds in the Yorkshire Dales!! We will have the entire place to ourselves! The hostel is called YHA Ingleton, a cosy Victorian house in the little village of Ingleton in northern England.

The hostel will have shared rooms, with options for mixed or single gender based on personal preferences. There will be plenty of heating, hot showers, running water, bathrooms, Wi-Fi, and everything else you need for one of our UCL Hiking Club residential trips! All bedding and linen will be provided, but you must pack your own towels and toiletries.

During our 3-night stay at the hostel, we'll do all the cooking, cleaning, and other chores ourselves! We'll have a rota of chores for everyone to know how they can help keep things running on the trip!

Travelling to the Dales:

UCL Hiking Club has also exclusively hired a private coach with 60 seats to take us directly from UCL Student Centre directly to the front door of the hostel (YHA Ingleton)! All you need to do is show up at the UCL Student Centre at 09:15 on Saturday 1st November where we'll have our private coaching waiting to take everyone up to the Dales!

  • Places are allocated using a lottery (random selection), NOT first-come-first-serve! This helps to keep things fair! This also means that your past hiking experience will not affect your application, as we want to welcome anyone with at least some basic hiking experience to come join us for an awesome autumn adventure!
  • You MUST have a £10 Discoverer or £15 Explorer membership  in order to be eligible for the lottery. You must get this before signing up for a spot!
  • You can sign up via this form here. Sign-ups will be open from 12:00 Wednesday 8th October to 23:59 Sunday 12th October, giving you until the end of the week to sign up!!

Confirmation of Spots on the Trip:

  • The results of the lottery selection will be released on Monday 13th October (mid-afternoon).
  • Everyone who signed up will receive an email. This email will either confirm that you were successful  in getting a spot on the residential trip, or the email will confirm that you have been unsuccessful and have been automatically added to the waiting list.
  • If you were successful in getting a spot on the residential trip, the email will contain a password and you will have 24 hours to purchase your ticket on this webpage. If you do not purchase your ticket in time, your place will be given away to someone on the waiting list.
  • Please note: all ticket purchases are non-refundable. Once you have purchased your ticket you will not be able to change your mind. If you purchase a ticket but your personal circumstances change and you cannot attend the trip, you will still need to let us know ASAP so that we know not to expect you for the coach and hostel!

FAQs

What equipment/kit do I need?

Please see this document for a full kit list!

Do I need hiking boots?

Yes. Hiking boots provide essential support for your feet, ankles, and legs on uneven terrain and help prevent serious accidents. This residential will have rocky and uneven terrain and therefore is only suitable for those with hiking boots.

How difficult will the hikes be on the residential?

Our hikes on residentials will be more challenging than our weekend walks/hikes. You will need to have at least some basic hiking experience in order to enjoy the hikes on this trip. 🔵Moderate, 🔴Challenging, and ⚫Difficult hike routes will be offered each day. There will be no options for complete beginners, as this terrain is intended for individuals with at least 🔵Moderate experience.

Can I travel there separately?

You are welcome to make your own way to the area, but you'll still have to pay the full price of your ticket. Additionally, you may find that local transport options are quite limited, so please plan carefully if you are making your own way.
