Wondering how students actually land research internships at highly respectable & competitive institutions, and what the work is like once you’re there? Hear from four current Natural Sciences students who will talk through their research internships throughout last summer: what they worked on, how they applied, and what's it actually like.

Meet the panel

Kai Cheung (3rd year, Organic Chemistry & Biomedical Sciences)
Spent six weeks at UCL East on the RECOMPENSE project, which upcycles polystyrene waste into an organic acid catalyst. He ran lab experiments and turned them into educational videos.

Joe Michael Sakamura Sissons (3rd year, Biomedical Sciences & Organic Chemistry)
Researched protein aggregation linked to neurodegenerative disease in the Protein Homeostasis and Drug Discovery Lab at DGIST, South Korea. He studied how inhibiting deubiquitinating enzymes reshapes TDP-43 and tau aggregation.

Ben Galbraith (3rd year, Organic Chemistry & Molecular and Cell Biology)
Studied the interaction between G-quadruplex DNA and Polycomb Repressive Complex 2 and its enzymatic consequences at The Francis Crick Institute.

Bea Butters (3rd year, Physics & Physical Chemistry)
Used femtosecond laser spectroscopy with UCL’s Fielding and Haynes groups to work out why a new class of anion-transporting molecules fluoresces. She also built an automated pipeline at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics to detect plasma crashes on the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator.
