Description

We are looking for Volunteers to mentor young people in the framework of our Refugee Response Programme. 

We offer mentoring to young people aged 10-25 who have arrived from a range of countries. In a programme adapted for the specific needs of refugees, our volunteers provide regular social, emotional and practical support, for one to two hours a week, for three to six months.

We offer volunteers bespoke and comprehensive training to ensure they’re prepared for their role, with ongoing support and structured supervisions, as well as a range of tailored resources. You’ll need to be able to commit to at least three months of support, and we require a DBS check, which we take care of, as well as two recent references.

*Please note that we require volunteers to be double vaccinated against Covid-19, and ideally boosted. Volunteers should have also received the MMR vaccine too.*

Duties

Volunteers will (among other things)

  • provide emotional, social and practical support to refugee and asylum seeking young people aged 10-25.  
  • offer a listening ear
  • signpost/ refer young people to other youth organisations
  • help young people navigate the education system in the UK
  • help them to adjust to the life in a new country
  • helping them with their English language skills
  • assist with exploring London as a city (museums, parks, etc.)
  • helping them form and achieve future goals
Who will the volunteers be working with?
Volunteers will be working with a young person between the age of 18-25 who holds a refugee, or asylum seeker status and recently arrived in the UK.

Volunteers will be provided training by members of our organisation and encouraged to attend regular group supervision meetings.
Training
We offer volunteers bespoke and comprehensive training to ensure they’re prepared for their role, with ongoing support and structured supervisions, as well as a range of tailored resources.

Training includes
- Online theoretical training – 2 hours (in your own time, whenever it suits you)

- In person practical training – 4-5 hours (including specialist training to supporting refugee and asylum seeking families)

Volunteers will be expected to complete all training sessions and attend regular supervisions to ensure safe practice.

Time commitment

We need volunteers to commit to at one 1-2 hours long weekly session for at least 3-6 months. This is to ensure that support is continued and persistent.
