St. John's Soup Kitchen and Food Bank
Church of England parish church, Soup Kitchen: Uniting the community through bringing together local volunteers to run a soup kitchen for the less fortunate in the area.
Description

We run a soup kitchen and food bank twice a week, providing food for between 50-100 people per week. We cook a homemade vegetarian meal (from veg we've grown ourselves, or saved from waste), and provide a food parcel from our own food bank. We like to get to know our guests, and help where we can in other areas of their lives.

Our shifts are Tuesday evening from 5:00 pm - 8:30 pm and Sunday from 10:30 am - 2:30 pm.

Duties

You'll be involved with prepping food, cooking, replenishing food bank stock, serving food, taking orders, washing up, and chatting to guests. If you're not a confident cook, there'll be someone else to guide you, and if you're worried about social distancing, you can stay with a back room role. We also have opportunities to work behind the scenes with fundraising and admin. Full details of all the volunteering roles can be found at https://www.stjohnskitchen.org.uk/volunteering

Who will the volunteers be working with?
You'll be part of a fab team of volunteers, most of whom are young adults living or working in the area. We have a long history of UCL students volunteering with us, and we always love having them as part of the team. The Vicar, Alice has overall responsibility, and as an alumnus of UCL, she's a bit biased...
Training
We provide an induction shift, a supportive network of fellow volunteers, and a dedicated area of our website with our various policies etc.

Time commitment

You can volunteer as often or as little as you like: once a week, or once every three months. It's up to you!
Our shifts are Tuesday evening from 5:00pm - 8:30pm and Sunday from 10:30am - 2:30pm.

This organisation is one of our community partner organisations.

Like all volunteer recruiters we work with, they have signed up to our service standards, agreeing to abide by our policy on partnership working to keep you safe and supported whilst you volunteer.

You’ll never be out of pocket for volunteering through us – with in-London travel expenses to and from your volunteering guaranteed.

In addition, the team here at Students’ Union UCL Volunteering Service is here to support you throughout your volunteering journey – you can get in touch with us at any time.
