Ministry of Stories
The Ministry of Stories is a writing and mentoring centre in east London, where anyone aged 8 to 16 can come and discover their own gift for writing. You’ll find us hidden behind our own fantastical shop Hoxton Street Monster Supplies.
Description

On Hoxton Street there's a shop like no other, purveying quality goods to Monsters of every kind. We need morbid mortals to keep Hoxton’s monstrous creatures stocked with their daily essentials, unwelcome the odd human customer, and keep our recently launched monster-human postal exchange Post Mortem running smoothly.

Shopkeepers will gain expert knowledge of all our products like Olde Fashioned Brain Jam, Cubed Earwax and our range of Tinned Fear, including their origins, benefits and side effects. They will also learn the inside scoop about our monster correspondents so they can encourage our more daring mini-human visitors to engage in letter exchanges with them.

Hoxton Street Monster Supplies (HSMS) can provide valuable work experience for any volunteers looking for paid employment in the retail sector. Long term, dedicated and punctual volunteers can be supplied with references if the need arises.

Duties

Shopkeepers will be working alongside our Shop Manager, Ministry of Stories staff, other volunteers, parents, children, customers (human) and monsters (dead and undead).

As a shop volunteer you will be the first point of contact for the Ministry and be able to explain the history and mission of Ministry of Stories and how profits from the shop are donated to help us continue our work with young people. Volunteers can also take to the internet to tweet about what’s in store!

Training
Shop Keepers will be given training in shopkeeping and sales skills

Time commitment

We expect all of our volunteers to commit to a minimum of six sessions every six months. The shop is open Thursday - Friday 1pm - 5pm and Saturday 11am - 5pm (a shopkeeping session will start and end 15 minutes either side of opening times).

This organisation is one of our community partner organisations.

Like all volunteer recruiters we work with, they have signed up to our service standards, agreeing to abide by our policy on partnership working to keep you safe and supported whilst you volunteer.

You’ll never be out of pocket for volunteering through us – with in-London travel expenses to and from your volunteering guaranteed.

In addition, the team here at Students’ Union UCL Volunteering Service is here to support you throughout your volunteering journey – you can get in touch with us at any time.
